I have the Lunarpages basic plan - is the server Microsoft or Apache?

AFAIK, Basic plans are all on Linux machines with Apache servers. Older servers have cPanel for a control panel, newer ones get LPCP by default. You pay extra for a Microsoft Windows machine with IIS server, which is unnecessary unless you plan on using software such as .Net or MSSQL (or you're a real Bill Gates fanboy).
