designs can be adapted to fit the four-colour process so perhaps it was a case of what they'd prefer to wear.  my own design didn't make it either and there's only two that i'd ever consider wearing myself, no worries - we each have our own prefs etc and it was an enjoyable compo.  perhaps one that could be contested annually.

with regards to the copyright thing, it would be far too expensive for the holders to bring to the courts.  anyway, using it probably does more good for them than harm..

lastly, one thing i would include in the pacman design is game over, written in the olde style of computer games.  i think it would add a nice touch and explain a lot in just two words.

good fun  Smiling

Isn't it only against copyright if you plan to sell it? We'd only be producing it for fun. And maybe selling on the black market...  Very Happy

Howdy!  Hiya

I want to clarify a few things that some people have brought up.  Now first things first, believe me it was not an easy job to only pick five entries for the poll on the forums here.  Myself and a select few picked these yesterday, and wanted to pick the ones we thought were the best - as mentioned with the earlier rules of the contest.

With the four color rule, any design that is picked - we will be working with the artist to make sure the winning design fits what is needed with the final t-shirt design.  As you can see, some of these are not the actual size they would need to be to be on a shirt so we would need to work that detail out as well as the four color rule on other back end things.

We also realize there might be a few hard feelings, but once again I want to confirm with you all picking only five was a very VERY hard thing to do.  The good news for those of you not selected for the forum poll is that you still have a chance of making it and winning.  Upper management with Lunarpages will also be looking into things to decide which one they think is best suited for the Lunarpages name as well.  So they might be picking a few of their own favorites too.

So with the voting plus management input and the chance of a square dancing clown jumping in and doing a ditty for all of us, things are far from over yet.  So please, keep voting - remember to have fun and if you have any issues you all know my door, err.. PM is always open.  Thumbs Up

Thanks to one and all!

I'd just like to say a few words.

First of all, in my defense, I had entered several designs which do not implement copyrighted characters or figures in the contest, which can be seen at:
http://www.lunarforums.com/lunarpages_contests/designers_win_a_xbox_360_or_400-t44747.15.html
So, please bear in mind that my originality was not restricted solely to mocking well established icons.

Secondly, although the Pac-Man games are copyrighted, as well as the figures, is it widely accepted that the use of Namco Bandai's Pac-Man characters in designs is permitted (and can be seen on several commercial designs), as it is considered to fall under the fair use doctrine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use .

So, because of the implementation of the characters, and its non-commercial use (it isn't exactly being sold for profit), then Namco Bandai would have little basis if they did attempt to pursue this as an issue in court.

Find it odd that my designs weren't even up for voting yet something that didn't fit the 4 color rule did. Oh well, sour grapes.

Wow!  All of the designs here can be printed with no more than three colors.

#1= Three colors.  Four if you print the black rectangle on a white shirt, but I would make the lettering black, leaving three colors again.
#2= Three colors.  You could use a charcoal for the 'block' under "Lunarpages", but not necessary.
   #3= Two colors.
   #4= Two colors.
   #5= One Color

I hate to mention this, but three of the four designs you submitted contained five colors.  You could easily make them four color designs, though.  In your defense, I'll say that I like your designs.  They're very clean and I like the "message".

Check out the design by bmw_chubb!  That design is Yamm'n!  ... I thought that was going to be the winner.  ...and I could separate that into only three colors!

I'm not trying to be a wise guy... I've worked "Separating" color for screen printers several times in my life.

...and who opened this can-o-worms, anyway?

Oh, and Mitch:  Unless you have access to a really Stellar (punny, huh?) screen printer, don't print your shirts with a 4-color process.  It's not impossible to do, but it takes an exceptional printer with good equipment.

I don't believe this would be a case of "Fair use". Even though we are not selling these shirts, they are being used to advertise Lunarpages which constitutes a for-profit use. Namco has been known to keep a close grip on their copyrights.

However, because the design would be classified as a parody or satire, it would still be eligible to be protected by the fair use doctrine. Not only that, but hundreds of designs around the net implement Pac Man, and to the best of my knowledge, these small manufacturers and providers which offer them aren't pursued in court by large companies such as Namco Bandai (it's a waste of time, especially considering the benefits of doing such a thing, which are few, if any). I just really couldn't see using the character to be much of a liability, especially considering that it wouldn't be sold on the market, and because it would most likely be a product kept to employees, some clients, etc.

additionally, we're getting far from the point here, we all had the opportunity to use 'pacman' but we didn't.  LP will print their chosen design, trademarked or not, with no loss to ourselves.  i think we're forgetting about how 'that' design sums up everything us entrants wished to say but never did.  the profitability gained from these t-shirts is, at best, absolutely minimal - but most likely zero.

i was the person who initially brought up the 'copyright' arguement [has since been deleted] but realised what a non-issue it really is.  there's no unfair advantage, legal threat or any other sour-grapes that may be thought of - LP asked for entries and would pick one as the winner.  'nuff said.

The first one got my vote. Although very simple, I must admit it's darn clever! Thumbs Up

Now I wish I had entered this contest. Some great prizes are up for the taking.

Lunarpages is holding a contest for our new t-shirt design, and you are all invited to submit your designs.  Currently we have black t-shirts with a white design on the back and we would like something a bit snazzier.  Please post your entries here as images or a link to your design, and on December 17th we will close out the contest and spend the following 11 days voting as a community on the best 5 entries.  Winner will be announced December 28th!

Was there a winner announced for this contest?
