A Guide To Setting Up Sub-Domains

First things first:

To add a Sub-Domain you must first login to your control panel using :
http://www.lunarpages.com/login.php or http://yourdomain.com:2082
or http://yourdomain.com/cpanel/ or the secure logins https://server.lunarpages.com:2083/ and http://server.lunarpages.com/cpanel

Making sure of course to change 'server' for your server and 'yourdomain.com' for your domain

You will then be prompted to press a button with the text 'Proceed To Control Panel' on it. This is just added security, just Press it and carry on...

Inside your control panel
Here you see a screen full of information about your account and lots of Icons which you would use to control/change the settings of your account, add or update pages, and a lot more.

Sub-Domains

What's A Sub-Domain?
a Sub-Domain is a URL which looks like this http://subdomain.yourdomain.com , 'subdomain' being what you choose and 'yourdomain' being your domain.

With A Lunarpages account you get 15 free sub-domains.

To add a Sub-Domain you must first login to your control panel as I demonstrated above, then click on the following Icon:

you will then see a screen appear with the option to create a Sub-Domain, fill in the box and click 'Add' as shown below.

In the image above the domain is 0verd0se.co.uk and the subdomain is called 'subdomain' so it would be accessible by typing http://subdomain.0verd0se.co.uk in the address bar of any browser.

If your Sub-Domain is succesfully added you will get the message:

SubDomain Adder
The subdomain, subdomain.0verd0se.co.uk has been added.

By default if you create a Sub-Domain, it will create a folder in your sites main directory (public_html) and whatever is in that directory will show up when the Sub-Domain is accessed.  If you would like your Sub-Domain to redirect to a differnt folder then you must setup redirection.

To setup redirection click the 'Go Back' link which will take you back to the main Sub-Domains page.

You must now select the Sub-Domain you want to redirect and press the 'Setup Redirection' button.

On the next page that appears, simply type in the URL you would like the Sub-Domain to be pointed to and press the 'Save' button.

If you would like to add FTP accounts to your Sub-Domains you can check out this thread made by the wonderful Michelle http://www.lunarforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21643&highlight=  Very Happy

or http://yourdomain.com/cpanel/ or the secure logins https://server.lunarpages.com:2083/ and http://server.lunarpages.com/cpanel

I am assuming my problem (new add-on domain shows host domain*) is one of propagation, but it may be helpful to others if the nameservers page was updated. Thanks.

*But why would this happen? If I enter the url of my new domain in the address bar and propagation had occurred, shouldn't I get my new domain's index, which I've already created and uploaded? And if propagation hadn't occurred, then shouldn't I get a 404?

Edit: Things have been clarified. While the cpanel still says "Welcome olddomain.com", I can get into the new directory through the old public_html. I think things were still transitioning, and that's why I wasn't seeing it. Also, I was expecting it to be the opposite -- or something...nevermind. I should have been more patient Smile

Message before the edit:

I changed my primary and delegated my now-former primary to an addon. It didn't go very smoothly, as the lp workers initially changed the former primary into a parked domain (this thread was helpful in assuring me that I wasn't going crazy and mis-defining what an addon is). Although I haven't heard anything back from them, that seems to be rectified.

However, I don't know how to access the directories of my new domain under cpanel (I layed out my question in a bit more detail here). I log in through the lunar pages secure login, and everything seems to be for my old primary. I'm new to this stuff, so I'm probably missing something basic. My login info will still be what it's always been, right?

Any help would be great.

You might want to update the section on parked domains to include a warning.

I learned this the hard way.

Never park an unrelated domain to your primary before making it an add-on for more than a day or two! And, never do this around a time the Google is updating pagerank!

You will end up having the "parked" domain assigned pagerank hijacked from your primary. So, you loose PR on your primary and have FAKE PR on the new domain.

Trust me, I know.

Hoping the next update comes early,

mi

Thank you, that was very helpful. I do have a question:

I just purchased a domain name and added it as a parked domain. For example, let's called parkeddomain.com. I would like to have that parked domain redirected to a subdomain of my main domain, so it would be like this:

parkeddomain.com ---> subdomain.maindomain.com

I already added the parked domain and created the subdomain. How do I set up the redirection? I was told that I should do a 'mod_rewrite', but I am not familiar with what that is or how to do it, and I don't know if that would be the best/only way. Could you please give me an idea? I thought this would be something I could easily do from the Cpanel, but it looks like it's more complex.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, Randy. I already tried that, but this option seems to be used to redirect a folder inside your main domain to something else. The beginning of your domain is pre-selected, so I am not able to do parkeddomain.com ---> subdomain.main.domain.com. It simply won't let me choose my park domain as the origin, just the main one.

Thanks for the quick reply. Smile

Hi,

I believe there is some confusion here.

This would actually be an addon domain. So you'd need to remove the domain from the Parked Domains section and add it as an addon domain. Then you can specify which folder (subdomain) you'd like the domain to resolve to.
