What cpanel does is edit .htaccess file. Editing the file itself is more powerful and cuts out the middleman that could introduce its quirks, as leigh alluded to.

I have had hotlink protection set up and working great on my site, but I am a little confused as today I added an addon domain.  I have included it in the list of allowed sites, but its the Extensions to allow and Url to Redirect to part I am confused about.
Currently I only have zip files in the extensions to allow box, because I am not too bothered about images being hotlinked, would it be better to include all extensions, would how its set at the moment create a problem for the addon domain?
Also I have my home page set as the URL to redirect to, would it be better to make a "no hotlinking" banner and upload it, then use that as the URL, now there are two sites on my hosting?
I am going to disable it for a while until I am sure what I need to do.

Edit: Don't worry about this now as I have removed the add-on domain.

I have a number of mp3s embedded in articles on my website and I'm tired of having them played out of context in various forums and on other sites. But when I added mp3 to the list of file types in HotLink Protection, the mp3s were no longer playable on my own site.

Is there a solution?

I just added mp3 to the Hotlink Protection list again, and this time I'm able to play the mp3s on my site. So whatever happened last time was just a glitch, it would appear.

I rejoiced prematurely. With mp3 added to Hotlink Protection, some of the mp3s on my site played normally, while others did not. As soon as I removed mp3 from the Hotlink Protection list, all the mps played normally again.

Is there an explanation for this disconcerting phenomenon?

The problem seems to lie in the incompatibility of Hotlink Protection with Safari. In Firefox, all the mp3s function normally. Sad
