Hi, cPanel 11 stage 1 is set to be released (final version) on 2007-05-24. Stage 2 is set to be released (final version) on 2007-05-13. cPanel recommends upgrading to Apache 2.0, and migrating to stage 1 when it is released. But when can we expect seeing cPanel 11 and Apache 2 on Lunarpages?"I want these updates as soon as possible."  The two upgraded versions of the softwares will solve all my current issues. Including content-negotiation, sub domains on add-on domanis' paths, amongst other issues. If there are issues with the upgrade (backwards-compability issues with older softwares/features, and that sort of things) then please do offer publishers to move to a special server with the newest software. I should not be to hard of a job to move an account from crappy-old-server to new-and-fancy-without-that-and-that feature. Before our system administrators upgrade to newer versions of cPanel or Apache, we go through extensive testing on our side before we push the upgrade out to all of our servers especialy in big upgrades such as this as a lot of things can go wrong. Currently at this time there is no timeline or expected date as to when and if our servers will upgrade to this version.
I do know that FrontPage extensions will not work with Apache 2.0 last time I tested cPanel 11. So offering it in the near future *may* be difficult.
If you want cPanel at this moment, a dedicated solution would be your best option.

I do know that FrontPage extensions will not work with Apache 2.0 last time I tested cPanel 11. So offering it in the near future *may* be difficult. Surely they will not be missed? I mean: Who the heck uses FrontPage?  When you say "near future" you mean: "Whenever Microsoft adds support for Apache 2 to their extensions", right? I Think it will be years... I would suggest you move all sites (if any) using FrontPage extensions (or other features that will not work) to a separate server. I understand that testing is required, and I am glad you guys do that. However... I still like my software fresh! Fewer bugs, and more features is always nice! If you want cPanel at this moment, a dedicated solution would be your best option. I consulted my vallet, and it does not agree. |

A lot of people use FrontPage extensions still (Both for Frontpage and Microsoft Web Expression). I highly doubt Microsoft will update Frontpage Extensions because they're trying to get everyone to use SharePoint.
I look at the differences between 1.3.x and 2.0 and did not see any significant improvements from an end-user or webmaster's standpoint. I did see a lot of improvements from a system administrators stand-point but those improvements didn't translate over into new features or less bugs for webmasters or end-users. An upgrade to 2.0 may not be a top priority on our system admins list based on the feature list I have seen.
If we do end up offering 2.0 it will be something like what we did with PHP 5 and only have a few servers with it or something where Microsoft completely sends Frontpage to the grave (they just released Expression Web so it's not completely dead yet) and we will just stop offering FrontPage extensions.
I'm not speaking on behalf of Lunarpages but merely speaking from experience so this may or may not be what Lunarpages might do later on.

Reasons for the two upgrades:
Apache 2: Runs generally faster, less bugs with and MUCH FASTER content negotiation, should handle Cache-Control better (by replying with a 304 Not Modified instead of 200 OK), signifigant updates to regular expression handling, ..
cPanel 11: Handles Apache 2.2, properly configure paths for sub domains on add-on domains (!!), ..
Both updates should come with: Better security, better support for non-Unix platforms, yada-yada, ..

cPanel 11 is already out for those using the Current build. Lunarpages uses the Release build (as do most sane people running production servers) which is more thoroughly tested and vetted for bugs.
I've got 11 on my personal box and I have to say it's really nice, but I don't think I'd jump to roll it out to a few thousand servers just yet.

The stage 1 release is set to be at the end of this month.
I just wanted to know about when it will be available. If a stable release is the criteria, then it should be at the end of the month. However I doubt that is the case...

I know we won't make the jump to 2.2 just yet because it doesn't even support suPHP which we require to know who is running PHP on what account. Baby steps...

Not being LP  , If it were up to me, I would roll out cPanel 11/Apache 2 on new servers, and let anyone who needed it to transfer. Let the Apache 1 series die out due to attrition, and Fantastico, et. al. slowly upgrading to need 2. But... I would not want the server I am on to be upgraded without a lot of advance notice- even then it would be problematic. FWIW, IMHO, IANAL, TANSTAAFL.  |

I saw cPanel 11 on a few of the newer servers that we have setup recently so we are now starting to use it. Currently there is no news as to when we will be doing an upgrade on all the servers.

I am one who uses the FPE. Even if you don't use the few webbots that require them (I no longer do), they're needed in order to auto-publish your site (by http) from within FrontPage, so removing support for them would affect a lot of people. I went looking for the FPE's to see if I could install them on my local Apache 2 installation. I didn't know that they wouldn't work with Apache 2, but it doesn't matter: there was apparently only one website authorized by Microsoft to distribute the FPEs, which were free. A few months ago, MS withdrew the authorization to distribute the FPEs. Thus it is no longer possible to obtain the FPEs at all.
