I'm in the process of moving up from a shared account to a VPS Dedicated one. Bit of a steep learning curve but I thought I'd ask this question in the open instead of direct to support.

I want to be able to set up my site mirroring the one I have on the shared server (which is live but receives very little traffic) and view and test it. Obviously I don't want to switch DNS from the present site to the new VPS site until all is fine.

Is there a way I can access a site on the VPS via the IP address only before I forward DNS to it?

The only way I've found is to locally change the .hosts file on my Mac but I just have a gut feeling that this is wrong!

Hello,

If your VPS has Plesk installed, you can use Site Preview option available on the domain's configuration page to test the site before switching DNS to VPS. Otherwise, hosts file setup appears to be the best option for testing.

Thanks, it does seem that hacking my hosts file is a pretty easy solution.
