I am currently using DW 4 and wonder if it makes sense to upgrade and if so, MX? 8? CS?

Hi Yaxley!  Smiling
Depends on how you would use it. If you want to use XHTML or CSS for example, Dreamweaver 8 is a significant improvement over older ones. I've been pleased with version 8, and it is a good tool for learning CSS.

All I know about version CS3 is what I've read. Reviews of CS3 seem to imply that it isn't much different than 8, with the Adobe name on the box.  However, CS3 has improved CSS capability, which interests me. Apparently you can use it on a Mac, too.

Thanks for the input and I read through a lot of posts here and just got confused:) Saw some dings at the CS3 and MX but don't recall anything negative about the 8. Suspect the cost is lower also. I basically just need it to design a few websites and don't really require anything "high powered." The DW 4 is kind of old Sad

Had MX2004 and upgraded to 8.  Both are nice, 8 has a bunch of stuff I still haven't looked at on how to use.  Specifically all those buttons added on the left hand side.  The code collapse option is very nice.

I'm more of a coder over WYSIWYG users so I'm probably going to go to something else later.  However, the auto-populate and automatic closure of tags feature is very, very nice.  The auto close has caught more than its fair share of nested tags I had forgotten about.

Still haven't used the library or snippets feature.

Might want to double-check the cost. Starting out with DW for the first time, CS3 is more expensive than 8. Upgrading to either 8 or CS3 from an early version might be in the same ballpark. If the cost to upgrade were similar, I'd pick the more recent CS3.

If you are more of a coder, then maybe the free Coffee Cup program is an option...price is right:)

The only thing I worry about with the new CS3, is that it is new and might have some bugs to iron out.

If you already have Dreamweaver, probably want to stick with that over Coffee Cup. Any DW CS3 bugs are likely to be the same old bugs as DW 8. If you are just beginning, try Coffee Cup.

I have the DW 4, which I use. I also have the Coffee Cup but find it cumbersome to use, because I tend to need more of a "bone head" program  Yep

Whichever way you go, with any one of these programs, chances are there is someone around here who has used it. When you get stuck, post a question about the specific issue and someone will most likely be able to suggest a solution.  Thumbs Up

I think you can upgrade to DW8 for $199.00, worth it, if you can afford it.

Thanks for the input. I'm not sure they sell an upgrade package for 8 anymore, and it looks like cs3 is one that is being pushed. Of course there is always ebay:) Nice to know that 8 is a lot better than 4, that is the info I was looking for. 4 is OK, but kind of old.......

I usually recommend MX, seems to have everything most users need
