I'm setting up a site which has a store selling a small number of CDs. I'm using OSCommerce currently, but can change if required. I haven't installed a payment gateway yet. The store is http://meditation-and-mantra.com/shop

We'd like to accept payment via credit card or paypal.

Would prefer that customers don't have to create an account - just provide payment info and shipping address.

We're on a shared host, so don't have full SSL (I guess).

The products will be shipped from Taiwan, but we're happy to be paid in USD.

The Merchant Services on the PayPal site looked like a suitable option, but that was the first thing I looked at and don't have any experience in this.

Any suggestions or links to info?

Thanks

I second that - PayPal is pretty simple to setup, and almost everybody knows what it is so it shouldn't be too hard of a payment option to use.

I have a question:

Does someone (the buyer) also have to a PayPal account to make a payment?

I installed the Paypal IPN contribution, and it seems to be working fine. It lets customers pay by credit card or paypal, and they don't need a paypal account.

Getting the paypal sandbox testing environment (which is just some test paypal accounts) set up was a f*cking nightmare though.

Customers still need to create an account at the shop. There's a mod to bypass that, which I'll look at soon.

Hey NevadaSam,

To my knowledge the buyer does need to have a Paypal account in order to purchase thru Paypal. I have used my credit card to pay thru paypal on ebay for example but I still had to have a paypal account registered. If there is a program that gets around this like mentioned by ajmo, I am not aware of it.

I hope this helps,

With the IPN mod installed, when customers are directed to the paypal page, they can sign in to their account or pay by CC if they don't have a paypal account..

Hey ajmo-
I'm also trying to set up a store but I went with Cube Cart instead of OSC.  I've been trying to set up Paypal as my payment gateway, but they say I need an SSL certificate if I want to use Paypal Pro.  Did you go with PP Pro?  Did you buy an SSL cert?  Thanks.

ps - nice job on the site skin! Thumbs Up

Thanks mx

I'm using Paypal Website Payments Standard, so the payment processing happens on the paypal site. Thus I don't need an SSL cert.

Paypal is nice but if you want to be professional you might want to give the customer more options than just Paypal. It's good to have Paypal as an option, don't get me wrong, but you should probably have another option as well. I used 2Checkout before because it's very cheap. All you have to pay is a one time fee of $50 and you're set.

They give you just about every option... VISA, Mastercard, and all the major cards.

With Paypal IPN you can pay with M/C, Visa or Paypal.' Or some yank thing called echeck or something.

Sending the customer to a third party payment site isn't that classy, but at least paypal ain't no hockshop. If I got this working satisfaction guaranteed, I might go for an inhouse payment situation but I'm on a shared host that won't give me SSL without crossing their palm with a bit more gold.

Whether that becomes necessary will involve a shitload more market research than I am prepared to indulge in.

On the other hand, PayPal is well known and trusted. Consider that your customers might be more comfortable with a brand name like PayPal, than handing over their CC information to an unknown name like you. Pluses and minuses on both sides.

I agree, Phil

I'd feel more comfortable with PayPal taking my details if I were the customer at a small store.

The only downside is that the customer needs to click the button to return to my site. In my testing, that seems an easy thing to forget. Plus, when they do, they're going from a secure paypal page to my unsecure page, and they get a warning that they're about to send potentially sensitive info (which is really just the IPN confirmation - no personal details) to an unsecure page. That could put people off.

Maybe there's a way around that warning?
