We're beginners and need help in choosing which shopping cart will work best Agoracart or osCommerce.  We want to keep costs down initially and were thinking of using the shared ssl and paypal.

In looking through some of the info, the osCommerce cart does not accept Shared SSL Certificates, but the AgoraCart will. osCommerce accepts PayPal upon install, but Agoracart does not, and there is an additional fee. I was hoping to be able to use both a Shared SSL Certificate and PayPal as the payment gateway, but it looks like neither cart accept both without some additional cost (whether it be the additional cost of a private certificate or the upgrade of the Agoracart to accept PayPal). Am I reading/understanding the information correctly?

Any comments would certainly be appreciated in starting out.
Thank you.

I have investigated oscommerce, but not agora cart. I decided to go with zen-cart for my store. I am using Pay Pal so I did not get an SSL certificate since all of that is handled by Pay Pal. Although zen-cart will accept the certificate. There is an extra cost to get a certificate (not sure right now what that is).

The reason I picked zen-cart was because I wanted to keep things simple and it looked like zen-cart had fewer bells and whistles, although plenty of functionality for what I was wanting to do.

I would suggest checking out the forums at both agora cart and oscommerce. I think you can get a good feel for how complicated a script is by seeing what problems others have reported with it.

I hope that is helpful, although I probably muddied the water for you by suggesting a third shopping cart.

Thank you, fretnmore.  Lunar Pages is our hosting company, and I didn't think that they offered zen-cart as a shopping cart option under their hosting.  I will also look at their forums for further guidance, thank you for suggesting that as well.

Won't osCommerce work without an SSL certificate? What do you need it for it you're using PayPal and not processing credit cards yourself? Are you planning to get a payment gateway and merchant account at some point, and do your own credit card processing? If you are, you will want a private (dedicated) SSL certificate anyway, as customers aren't going to trust you if they see "lunarpages.com" on the certificate.

osCommerce is written in PHP, which I believe is incompatible with shared SSL certificates. I think Agora Cart and maybe Zen Cart are Perl/CGI based, and thus will work with shared SSL certificates. IIRC, one or two of the carts offered by LP are derivatives of osCommerce and thus written in PHP.

Zen-cart is available thru Fantastico - or at least it was a month ago when I installed it on my site.  I'm not into all the root coding of it, but it is putting up .php pages. You can take a look at mine if you want at http://www.triwolf.net/catalog

I wasn't worried about the certificate at this point because I am only using Pay Pal Express Checkout, not the Pay Pal IPN. They are two different entities.  So everything that has to do with a credit card happens at the Pay Pal site.

I hope that helps.
