Yesterday I installed OSCommerce to get familiar with its operation. I mildly freaked when I went to the home page and it "seemed" that more of the underpinnings was exposed more than I expected, and then I promptly removed OSC Confused

In the default Fantastico install, is it safe to leave OSComm on the public html directory and then add/remove images and items?

yeah, but if you do that you wont be able to use the fantastico updates/remove features so you'll have to do them manually

Before you commit to a particular shopping cart and start doing heavy modding, try the various shopping carts that are out there.

I used osCommerce for a few months before becoming frustrated with the backend hassle of debugging all the bugs, especially after adding a seamingly minor contribution.

I started over with Joomla and VirtueMart.  I'd highly suggest looking at that as an option.
