Could someone please explain the difference between using Paypal and a Payment Gateway? What exactly is a Payment Gateway? The gentleman at Lunarpages who I spoke to on the phone said he wasn't quite sure how Paypal works.

I'm assuming that if one decides to use Paypal that means that your customers will have to be redirected off-site to the Paypal website...rather unprofessional overall in my opinion.

A Payment Gateway is perhaps some way of setting up your bank account to receive credit-card payments...through your own bank? I just received an offer from my bank not too long ago that I believe is similar to this, but the cost was rather prohibitive at $200.00+ US. Does that sound reasonable or is there a cheaper way to find a Payment Gateway?

Basically, I would like to have users be able to pay for their purchases on our website without being redirected, but I'm not sure how to balance or feature compare Paypal vs. Payment Gateway.

Any help/tips appreciated. Thanks!

Hi:

I'm at the same junction you're at with ecommerce but have made some decisions based off some information that I was given. From what I understand, you have correctly identified the differences between Paypal and a gateway.

Last month, a Tax Accountant told me that a client used PayPal and it took him 1 year to clean up the mess. (That's a scary thought!) I mentioned this to my bank and the person who has been doing merchant accts for 7 years told me the same thing!  Sad.  Customers have told her nightmerish stories. Over a period of time, Paypal will start to ding you with overcharges or undercharges. For this reason, PayPal is out not an option for me. BTW, PayPal bought out VeriSign which was highly respected, is now showing bad signs. Here's a blog:

My bank works with www.authorize.net for payment gateways. Authorize checks out these companies. I went thru about 30 listings on their site this weekend. Some have good prices and some are expensive, depends on what you need. There are a few that I glanced at and liked but need to look into them more thoroughly to see what will and will not work. Overall, the gateway seems to be the better option especially avoiding the tax nightmare with Paypal.  Surprised  Perhaps a little extra $$ for services is not so bad afterall.

Hope that helps.  Very Happy

Well, for a different take from someone happy with PayPal:

Maybe we are lucky, but we've never been "dinged" for any unexpected charges, nor have we had payments withheld.  What we have had with PayPal is NO monthly merchant account charges, NO setup fees, NO monthly payment gateway charges, NO SSL charges.  US websites can take credit cards without requiring customers to register for PayPal. The PayPal payment info opens in a new window that can be customized to coordinate with your website and has a continue shopping button to take the customer back to where they were on your website.  Also using certain PayPal tools gives us security that we might lack otherwise.  Oh... and you aren't locked into contracts that tie you up making payments for several years (as many (most) merchant account providers require).

Just depends on what you are looking for, so be sure to do your homework before you make any decision.

I am also a happy Pay Pal user. I think a big part of the decision is the amount of volume of sales you expect to have. Ours are pretty minimal, but steady. We clear between $200 and $400 a month. That hasn't been enough to justify paying the monthly charges, etc. for a gateway to me. If you are bringing in considerably more than that, then the extra hassle might be worth it to you. There are still a lot of people who won't use Pay Pal.

Ditto here.  I've had nothing but good luck with Paypal though my website (oscommerce) as well as their virtual terminal so I can accept credit cards over the phone.  (It's a 20$ per month charge, but still much cheaper than anyone else I looked at).

I'd have to agree with you both on this, if ecommerce is fairly low, Paypal would be the way to go.

In my case, however, I'm expecting a high volume base over a period of time and this is where I would run into problems with Paypal and unexpected extra charges. Thru my bank, I incur no extra fees for minimum/maximum monthly charges.

I also found free software, if anyone is interested, on managing ecommerce.

Still reading...(a never-ending story!)

For those who like Paypal's system but don't like the off-site transaction, you can upgrade to Paypal Pro. Apparently, you can modify the page to look like your site and customers can make a transaction without noticing the difference that they have left the site into Paypal's system.

I don't have this but thought I would share what I've found.
