Hello there.
I have decided to create a page to sell used books. I already bought the domain and the hosting plan. I even started designing the web using dreamweaver... I don't have experience with databases software... so, I was considering not to do it very sophisticated, just as simple as I could... But then, I realized that it was not that simple.... That is, visitors need a search engine book to find the book they want to buy...
I was checking the options that lunarpages offer for e-commerce and I found a site flash-template-design that offers templates for me to have an online store set and ready to use. I have written an email to them, asking if I will be able to set my template and they say YES. I have experience designing and I have set some scripts to receive emails through the web... My question is... Do you really think that I will be able to configure this template they sell for US$145? Help
Thanks for your response,

José Carlos. Mmm Coffee

Well, you can spend $145 to have someone do it for you, or you can spend $0 to use a canned shopping cart such as osCommerce, Zen Cart, or CubeCart (all installable from cPanel > Fantastico scripts) or many other free or cheap systems out on the Web. I'd be concerned about a vendor who may not have a lot of experience with the ins and outs of ecommerce making a site for you. There's a lot more than making pretty pages. Do they state that they've put together lots of ecommerce sites? Are they willing to tell you which ones so you can look at them? If not, I'd avoid them. At any rate, be sure to read the discussions on this board about good shopping carts for beginners.

I agree with all of what MrPhil says, but I just wanted to add something.  I actually find it somewhat fishy that someone (or a company) is charging only $145 to set up an e-commerce site which generally takes a lot of work to do.  Just be weary.

Also, if you decide to do it yourself... I've used osCommerce to make a book store site of around 100,000 or so books.  It's not the easiest to maintain (OK, it's a downright pain to maintain [especially if you're synchronizing the records from a physical store's database]), and it doesn't have the easiest learning curve, nor the prettiest interface (backend or frontend), but it gets the job done.  Fortunately, though, you have a few more options than just this.  I recommend you take a visit to this site and try some e-commerce shopping carts out for yourself to see if any of them suit your needs.  Some of these open source shopping carts have large communities that support beginners and can help out with any problems you might run into.

At best, they've got a canned setup that they just slap a new store name on to -- it may, or may not, fit what the client wants and needs. At worst, they're using it as a loss-leader to either do their learning on, or lure the client into expensive upgrades. Either way, they're not going to be able to afford a lot of hand-holding at that price. If they can show off a number of live sites that they've done, with happy clients,...

Yeah, he'll be weary of doing battle with a bad system if he isn't first wary about the claims! Smile
