Bamboozled by password protected directory and FrontPage (maybe?)

The Password Protect Directory feature in your Control Panel allows you to restrict access to a particular directory within your account and allow access by assigning usernames and passwords to individuals that you choose to allow such access.
To access this feature click on Web Protect. You will be asked to select the directory that you want to protect, simply click the text link of the directory name and you will be taken to the screen where you complete the specifics for user information.
You will need to enter a unique name (Protected Resource Name) for this password protection in the upper section of the screen. The name must be a single word or phase with no spaces. Enter the name and click the save button. Now you are ready to add users that can have access to the specific directory.
To add a new user, simply input the username and password and click Save. You will be taken to a screen that will confirm the new user and you can click the link on the bottom of the screen to go back and add more users.
To change a password for a user, simply input the username and the new password for the user and click Save.
NOTE: This feature might not work with Front Page Extensions Installed.
NOTE: Usernames and passwords MUST be from 6 to 8 characters long. Any less than 6 or greater than 8 will cause your protected directory cease to function and you will receive an error when trying to enter the directory.

First - are the bolded items really true? I'm using FrontPage 2003, and have spent the last several hours trying to get a directory password-protected. I create a directory, then publish to it. After I apply a user/password (through cpanel), I cannot access it - keeps asking for userid/password, and doesn't accept them. If I create a dummy directory and put a few files in it (and subsequently apply user/password) - works just fine. I've tried using urls with and without the full address - doesn't make any difference.

I have to conclude it's a FrontPage issue, but I'm really stumped.

This information relates to the Linux servers. On Windows servers your milage may vary.

On Linux servers, password-protecting a folder in cPanel works properly and does not bother the FrontPage extensions. FrontPage knows nothing about the password protection.

The password protection username & password are used for web browsing access to the folder, not for FrontPage publishing. In FrontPage, continue to publish using the original username & password.

When hyperlinking to a password protected folder name, use a trailing slash after the folder name, i.e the relative link to the "secret" folder would be secret/ with the trailing slash.

The trailing slash is not used when linking to a specific file, i.e. secret/index.html.

If you plan to stay with FrontPage, consider upgrading to FrontPage 2003 now.

I don't see any inconsistencies with what I've done (relatative to what you've stated).

1 - published a one-page website to a folder called testpass (usual access ID/password)
2 - verified access (http://www.myrabo.com/testpass/)
3 - password protected folder (boards/test01)
4 - attempted access to site - get prompt for username/password, enter as above - no luck (Authorization required).
5 - tried numerous times - same result

I must be doing something wrong. If I create a folder, put a couple files in it and password protect it, it works fine (as in testpass01).

I created a subdirectory under the website with the files I want to protect (pdfs) and linked to them. Now, when I try to open the link, a userid/password prompt comes up like before, but under these conditions it works.

Based on questions/responses in the cpanel forum, it looks like a password protected directory is web-bot/crawler proof. Is that true?

Yes, files in the protected folder will not be indexed.

In experimenting I found that when setting up a password protected a folder it works with this sequence

* In cPanel click the icon to password protect.

* At the top of the dialog, check the box to protect, enter the resource name and click Save.

* At the bottom, Enter the username and password then click Add User. It's important to enter both the username and password at the same time.
