hello!

boy it's been a long time since I've been on the board!  And since the last time I was here i've started to use FrontPage2003 to maintain my site.

about six months ago i did this for the first time and, after installing the extensions from my cpanel, i published with no trouble at all and was very thankful for the simplified experience!

Now i am trying to completely retool my page for another purpose.  I made the new htm pages, saved and then selected to publish my site.
This time though, I get the following message:
"Unable to open 'http://www.mysliceofheaven.com'.
server error: server error: The server extensions were unable to access the file "httpd.conf". Please check the file permissions."

Then it gives a list of 4 possible causes that i don't think apply.

the only difference between when i published the first time and now is that now i happened to be at the office when i chose to publish the site.  This means i am behind a firewall.

Could my being in the office be causing this or is it something else that might be coming from the LP server?

Thanks,
Natasha

Every LP account has recently been required to update its password, and those that didn't have been locked out. Did you get an email about changing your password? They say they sent it to everyone, but lots of people never received it. Anyway, you might be locked out of your account right now -- have you tried signing in through cPanel?

I didn't get any email, but when I tried to log in yesterday I was locked out and to fill out the 'forgot my password' request.  I then logged in with the newly generated password and was prompted to change my password immediately....after i did all this i was able to get into the cpanel without any trouble.

should i reinstall the frontpage extensions?

Since you now have a new account password, I would presume that you need to tell FrontPage somewhere about it. I can't think of any reason to re-install FP Extensions -- they wouldn't be affected by a password change, as far as I know (but then again, I don't use FP).

Palestar, did you figure out how to fix this problem?

I just got the same error message when trying to publish my FrontPage site! I have had my website at Lunarpages for about two years and never had a problem with publishing before.

I did change my password with Lunarpages when I received their email about it. Now, after changing my password I could only publish with FP using my OLD password. The new password did not work with publishing. And starting today, I cannot publish at all. I get that error message "server extensions unable to access the file httpd.conf file".

Lunarpages also sent me an email saying due to hardware updates my site was moved to another server two days ago. This is the first time I am trying to publish my site after this change.

Help! Anybody?

I started reading older messages on this board and found the answer. I reinstalled my FP extensions (I have two sites) and now I can publish with no problems using my new LP password.  Nope

This also might be fixable by opening your remote site "live" in FrontPage and then clicking Tools > Server > Change Password (at least I think that's the menu option). During the procedure that follows, whenever you're prompted for your "password", it's asking for your OLD one. The new one doesn't take effect until you've completed the whole procedure.

When I changed my password in CAP, it did not change it in the FP extensions on the server, and it was necessary to go through this procedure in addition to the CAP change to get it changed.

If I had not done that, when I published, FrontPage would have still successfully begun the publish using my old password. However, I believe there comes a time in the publish when FP must log in to your server using your real CAP/cpanel password, not the FP one. If your CAP and FP passwords don't match, I think it crashes the publish, sometimes with some really weird errors. The one reported here might be one of them.

Anyway, changing the password in FP might be something to try before reinstalling the FPE's.

server error: server error: The server extensions were unable to access the file "httpd.conf"
This is usually a FP extensions issue, which is fixed by reinstalling the extensions in cPanel.

FrontPage has been discontinued.
If you plan to stay with FrontPage, consider upgrading to FrontPage 2003 now.

I got this httpd.conf error recently after my server was upgraded (moved to new hardware, I think). I uninstalled the extensions, cleaned up old extensions, and then installed the extensions and that fixed it.

If that didn't work for you, I'd recommend filing a support ticket.

Easy fix:

1. Use your favorite text editor to build your website by hand.
2. Upload your site using a regular FTP client.
3. Have a drink and relax with all the spare time you have left after not fighting with FrontPage all day.
 Very Happy

Seriously though, SteveW mentions cleaning up the old extensions.  That's good advice.

The proper method to reinstall your FP extensions is to uninstall, then cleanup, then install.  Don't just hit the reinstall button.

If nothing mentioned in this thread so far works, just open a ticket.

It's still showing me the same error, and when I go by My network places, it says "documents in this folder are not available.....  I did the ticket, but they couldn't solve, so they suggested me to come to the forum to find an answer , because maybe the problem was FrontPage.

I don't know what to do.... Any suggestions?

I'm receiving the same error message...

"The server extensions were unable to access the file "httpd.conf".  Please check the file permissions."

Can someone explain how to "clean up"  FrontPage server extensions?  I would like to try to uninstall, "clean up", and reinstall the extensions.

In the cPanel FrontPage section there are links to uninstall, cleanup, and reinstall the extensions.

In some cases after using the uninstall and cleanup, you need to also use the cPanel File Manager to delete the FrontPage special folders with names starting with the underscore character. Then go back into the FrontPage section and click to reinstall.

After reinstalling you may need to do a full publish so FrontPage can sync up with the files on the web server.
