Good morning,

I've been authoring my own pages with FP 2000 for about five years (yeah, I know, I need to switch to DreamWeaver... it's been too time-consuming so I'm stuck w/ FP for now...)  I'm an XP user.

I'm not a *complete* troglodyte about publishing and authoring, and related.  Just mostly.

But I switched to DSL after being a dial-up user for ages, last month, and since then haven't been able to publish updates to my page.  And I haven't had much time to throw at the problem.

LP Tech support seems unable to help me.  I've submitted support tickets and not gotten it resolved.  The last response was that LP is limited in experience with 3rd party software, but I'm scratching my head at that.

Here's what happens.  I launch FP, go to file, select to publish, and after I click 'publish' in the little dialog box, I get the following error message:

'Could not find a web server at 'www.mandrakeapothecary.com' on port 80. Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the web server may be temporarily out of service.'

To date, I've done the following at LP Tech Support's behest:
uninstalled and then reinstalled the FP extensions from cPanel, twice
exited and restarted FP
checked my internet connection...

I've also disabled Norton Internet, thinking maybe it was telling FP to get stuffed and was denying access to the internet.  No dice.  And I've temporarily disabled Windows Firewall and tried to publish.  Again, no dice.

Anyway, the server's there.  It can be published to.  Tech Support did this, published to it.  My page is up, in all its un-updated glory.  Gah.

This only started after the DSL switch-over last month.  I think I need some remedial help on proxy servers and where to get at those.  And port 80.

I did an hour of searching here for similar problems, but didn't find much, so I'm posting.

Anyone...?  Anyone...?  Bueller...?

Your FP extensions appear to be working.  Try opening the site live in FP. File... Open Web... http://www.mandrakeapothecary.com or http://mandrakeapothecary.com to see if you can open it.

The MS Knowledgebase has quite a few errors on port 80 errors. Maybe one of them will strike a cord. http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?mode=a&query=port+80&catalog=LCID%3D1033&1033comm=1&spid=919

Since the site works on dialup, my guess is that the problem is with one of the security settings on your computer.

Well, thanks for the link.

It doesn't fix the problem, but it's good to know they almost have an answer to the question.

The security stuff on my computer has not changed.  Like I said, I've tried disabling the firewall for Norton and Windows, and still cannot publish.

I'm worried that even if I try to teach myself DreamWeaver and rewrite the page with that tonight, it's still going to not publish because of some issue with the dang port.

Oh well.

Some suggestions are:

* Try opening the site live in FrontPage to see if the extensions are working. Open the web at http://yourdomain.com or http://www.yourdomain.com.

* Ask a friend who has FrontPage to try opening the site live on the server to see if the extensions are working.

* Install FrontPage on a different computer and try publishing from there.

* Obtain a copy of FrontPage 2003 and install it on your computer. FrontPage 2000 is known to have quite a few of bugs and "issues" that were fixed in FrontPage 2003. FrontPage 2003 is much better in many respects including improved publishing and *may* fix the problem.

* Use FrontPage FTP publishing to publish instead of HTTP publishing. I believe FTP does not use port 80. If FrontPage 2000 does not have FTP publishing, try a third-party FTP program. FTP publishing may be fine depending on if you have used certain of the FrontPage web components such as forms that depend on HTTP publishing. Again, FrontPage 2003 is much better in FTP publishing than FrontPage 2000.

* Delete the temporary files as detailed in the next message.

Here are some things to try to clean up old temp files.

* In Internet Explorer, select the Tools menu and choose Internet Options... in the Browsing History section, click Delete Files then click Temporary Internet Files. Note: In versions other than IE7 this sequence may vary.

* In Windows, click the Start button... All Programs... Accessories... System Tools... Disk Cleanup. Wait 2-5 minutes or more while Disk Cleanup scans your hard drive. Make sure there are checks in the boxes for Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, Web Client/Publisher Temporary Files, and Temporary Offline Files, then click OK.

Note: the following sequences may be different in versions prior to 2003.

* In FrontPage, with your site open, select the Tools menu and choose Site Settings... Advanced tab... Delete Temporary Files.

* Select the Tools menu and choose Recalculate. Wait 1-3 minutes or more for it to finish.

* Select any file in the Folder list then select the view menu and choose Refresh.

* Select the File menu and choose Close Site. Then close FrontPage and restart your computer.

There's also some evidence that you may need to edit or delete the lines in your Windows "Hosts" file since you changed Internet access methods.

You can search Google for frontpage windows hosts file and/or read the page at http://knowledge.3essentials.com/index.asp?menu=a1_2&go=article&id=213

Note that when editing the hosts file, a simple test is to comment out each line by adding a # to the beginning of the line.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I was in touch with the ISP I use, and they suggested that I uninstall and then reinstall Norton.  I have some trepidation about that because we did this at work and it corrupted a harddrive, but I've been meaning to nix it, so...

There aren't any temp files to clean up, because I use mozilla browsers and clean out the cache regularly.

It's funny that I've been using FP 2000 for eons and not had any issues.  I never upgraded because it was working fine and I don't use it to do anything fancy shmancy.

When I get home from work, I'll try some of these suggestions....

Port 80 shouldn't be an issue, by the way.  The ISP told me I wouldn't be able to access the internet if port 80 was having an issue.

Thanks again.

Okay, here's the update.

I attempted to upload my page via ftp, as was suggested.

And apparently WIPED EVERYTHING OFF THE FARKING SERVER in the process.  About a half hour ago.

My email is gone.  My page is gone.

I feel ill.

And tech support has not returned my call yet.  That's fine, it's early.

I can't even go into my file manager to put up a temporary page saying, 'we are experiencing technical difficulties', because the public folder is GONE.

Geez louise.

You may wish to contact support@lunarpages.com on this issue instead.  Our main offices are not open yet, so it may be a while before you call is returned. We should be able to help via e-mail though.  Sorry to hear about your most recent issues but hopefully this will help. Smile
