It's been a while since I last published my site.  I'm attempting to do so now using FrontPage 2003.  FrontPage would not let me view my remote site, saying that "the server extensions were unable to access the file "httpd:conf", and suggesting that FrontPage extensions may not be installled on the server.

Control Panel says that my FP extensions are installed.  I decided to uninstall them and then reinstall to see if that would clear up the problem.  I uninstalled them without any problem, but now I cannot reinstall them.  This is the message that appears on the screen.  If I exit Control Panel, reenter, and click on "FrontPage Extensions" they still show as uninstalled.

I have 2 problems:
1) What is the httpd.conf file that FP can't find?
2)  Why can't I reinstall my FP extensions?

Can anyone help?  Thanks!

I am now getting error messages when I click on "clean up old extensions" that I hope will be helpful in determining the cause of my issue:

When I click on "Clean up old extensions" I get this error message:

Attempting to remove FrontPage extensions...

Starting uninstall, port: 80.

Error: There is no web named "".
The version (unknown) of the server extensions you are trying to uninstall cannot be uninstalled with this tool. You must upgrade this virtual server to the current version, and then use owsadm.exe to uninstall.

Just as a shot in the dark, log in to CAP (the Login link from the LP home page) and see if you get a password expired message. If so, change your pw. Then try uninstall/cleanup/reinstall again. If nothing else, this procedure will ensure that your FPEs are using the same pw as your main account.

If you still get errors, file a support ticket. None of those errors you reported are normal.

Thanks, Steve.  I logged on initially from the LP home page, so there's no PW issue. I'll open a support ticket.

If a simple reinstall and cleanup of the server extensions does not help, it often helps to do a complete cleanout of the public_html folder and republish the site. The following instructions assume that you create and edit your web site files on your computer then publish the changes to the server. Please be sure you have the source files on your computer so you can republish your web site.

* Go into cPanel, click the FrontPage icon, and uninstall the extensions. Then click to cleanup old extensions. Disregard any error messages.

* Using the cPanel File Manager or another FTP program, delete ALL files and folders INSIDE the public_html folder. Do not delete the public_html folder itself.

* Exit the File Manager, click the cPanel FrontPage icon, and install the FrontPage extensions.

* Open your web site in FrontPage and publish to http://domain.com.

All the best, Rick E

FrontPage has been discontinued.
If you plan to stay with FrontPage, consider upgrading to FrontPage 2003 now.

Search the Microsoft KB for error messages:

Microsoft groups have additional FrontPage assistance:

If you are unable to reinstall your FrontPage tickets please open a ticket and ask them to escalate it.  It's a very quick fix for someone with root access.
