Here are the best tips I've collected for publishing in FrontPage. Following these tips helps keep the FrontPage extensions happy and working smoothly.

* DO wait until your domain name has propagated before attempting to publish your web site. You should be able to browse to http://yourdomain.com (substitute your own domain name) and see your site on the new web host. A new or recently transferred domain name may take 24-72 hours to start working.

* DO make sure you have installed the FrontPage extensions in the control panel.

* DO name your home page index.htm because that's usually the first file the server looks for.

* DO use all lower case file names and folder names because Unix and Linux servers are case sensitive. You can use numbers, hyphens, and underscores, but avoid other special characters.

* DO occasionally select the Tools menu and choose Recalculate Hyperlinks because it repairs hyperlinks, updates information for all FrontPage components, and synchronizes web data. Wait 30-120 seconds for it to finish before publishing.  

* DO use FrontPage HTTP publishing to transfer the files to the server by selecting the File menu and choosing Publish Site. Publish to web address http://yourdomain.com (substitute your domain name, don't use www).

* DO NOT use third-party FTP programs to transfer files to your web site because the special FrontPage housekeeping files often do not get transferred. Use only FrontPage HTTP publishing.

* DO NOT manually edit the htaccess file or perform tasks in the control panel that cause the htaccess file to be edited (this rule may be violated by experts who are willing and able to deal with the consequences.) If you do choose to edit the htaccess file, add the new lines to the end of the file and do not edit the original FrontPage lines. You may want to create a copy of the original htaccess file so you can copy it back if your edits cause problems.

Password protection:

Here at LunarPages, using cPanel to apply password protection to a folder does not seem to bother FrontPage. This means you can either use the cPanel method of password protection or the FrontPage method (create a FrontPage subweb, change browsing permissions, and create one or users with passwords.) The cPanel method has the advantage of not requiring you to create a FrontPage subweb.

Does what you say mean that if you use FrontPage to publish your web,  then you can't edit it afterwards except through Front Page?      I travel quite a bit in South America and sometimes use very basic internet cafes that won't have FrontPage installed.    I'd like to be able to alter my published pages a bit when I'm travelling.

If I can't edit my site when away maybe I would be better swopping to Dreamweaver.

Thanks Princess,  am going to move from FrontPage to Dreamweaver.

From what I've read this means
   1.  Cpanel, File Manager,  Public_html - delete all files and folders but not the Advanced Guest Book folder nor the Public-html one.  
   2.  Cpanel, Frontpage Extensions,  Disable
   3.  Upload replacement Dreamweaver files to Public_html

Does that sound okay?

Hi David,

Please do not delete folders.  Simply uninstall the FrontPage extensions, which will remove any and all unnecessary FrontPage components.  If you went into File Manager and then started deleting all folders but the public_html one and guestbook one, you would then have deleted these folders:

tmp
mail
www
a bunch of others also important

You could no longer get Webalizer or Analog stats when you deleted the tmp folder.  You could no longer receive mail after deleting the mail folder.  The www folder symlink would no longer work.  Basically, you would have harmed your account and we would then have to go in and recreate it for you.  Please never delete folders unless you know absolutely what those folders contain and do.

New to the FrontPage thing, so if I unistall the FrontPage extensions, it will erase the site that I have uploaded??

I recently uploaded an update of my site after several months of the old one.  Now the navigation bar is messed up.  I am trying to fogure out how to get that fixed and am hoping that if I start all over on the server that will happen.

Sometimes it sucks to be a newbie!  

This will tell how to create a subdomain with the address http://subdomain.domain.com and optionally have different FrontPage authors just for the subdomain.

* Open the main site in FrontPage and create a new folder with the desired subdomain name. Publish your changes to the web host.

* In cPanel, create a subdomain in the /subdomain folder.

Browsers can get to the site by going to either http://subdomain.domain.com or http://domain.com/subdomain.

If you want to have different FrontPage authors for the subdomain, continue reading... otherwise, you're finished.

* In FrontPage, open the main site live on the server ( open http://domain.com ).

* Select the Tools menu and choose Server... Administration...

* Convert the subdomain folder to a subweb.

* Close the main site.

* Open the subweb live on the server ( open http://domain.com/subdomain ).

* Under Users and Roles click Change Subweb Permissions. Select Use Unique Permissions for this Subweb.

* Add users to the subweb and assign them the role of Author.

* Close the Administration page and close all open FrontPage sites.

Notes:

Your FrontPage authors will publish to http://domain.com/subdomain.

Yes, you have it correct. In each line of the example, substitute your desired name for the word subdomain.
