I am having trouble since switching to LunarPages with publishing to my subsite. I am using FrontPage2003. When I open my subsite in FP and I access my remote site it asks me for my login, but it is not recognized. I am asked if I want to create a a subsite in LP. Yet, the folder is there when I am in my main site. Should I convert my FP subsite to a folder and use LP password protect alone? I have very critical info to get to my subscribers and can't get it to them. Please help me.

* DO NOT use third-party FTP programs to transfer files to your web site because the special FrontPage housekeeping files often do not get transferred. Use only FrontPage HTTP publishing.

* DO NOT manually edit the htaccess file or perform tasks in the control panel that cause the htaccess file to be edited (this rule may be violated by experts who are willing and able to deal with the consequences.) If you do choose to edit the htaccess file, add the new lines to the end of the file and do not edit the original FrontPage lines. You may want to create a copy of the original htaccess file so you can copy it back if your edits cause problems.

Password protection:

Here at LunarPages, using cPanel to apply password protection to a folder does not seem to bother FrontPage. This means you can either use the cPanel method of password protection or the FrontPage method (create a FrontPage subweb, change browsing permissions, and create one or users with passwords.) The cPanel method has the advantage of not requiring you to create a FrontPage subweb.

FrontPage and FTP

I've found that in many cases I can use FTP on a FrontPage site without harming the FrontPage extensions.

* In a separate folder with no FrontPage files in it, I can FTP to and from the folder as much as I want and FrontPage doesn't care.

* In a separate folder I can install and run a PHP script such as phpBB or SMF and FrontPage doesn't care.

* In FrontPage folders on the site, I can FTP new versions of files that FrontPage doesn't use (for example webcam pictures, PDFs, and streaming media files) and FrontPage doesn't care.

The main activities that FrontPage DOES care about are

1) Rewriting the htaccess file and

2) Rewriting the files associated with the features using the FrontPage server extensions.

The Microsoft page below contains a chart that shows the features that use the server extensions. Our column is the column labeled "with server extensions for FrontPage 2002."

If you plan to stay with FrontPage, consider upgrading to FrontPage 2003 now.

The "keep it simple" philosophy...

Here are my standard admonitions for those just starting out with FrontPage. If you keep it simple, you'll be able to troubleshoot problems when they arise.

* Find a design you like then create your pages yourself using some simple tables. Don't use templates because you won't know how to fix them when they break.

* Don't use the "magic" features such as themes, navigation, and shared borders because you won't know how to fix them when they break.

* For common page elements such as top banners, footers, and navigational bars, create the the elements on pages by themselves then use the FrontPage Include feature to include the separate pages into the main page.

I guess this applies to that "my web" silliness that Frontpage tries to saddle you with. I personally like to build my own site without FP's "help," so I avoid their upload program like the plague. I originally built my site (http://www.lordbalto.com ) with the free version of Frontpage and never felt like trying to convert it to the 2002 method. WSFtp works just fine. I use it all the time with no problems.

Just a heads up for those who don't like to be automated to death.

hello Ricke,
Your tips seem to be very helpful though I still have 3 issues.

1: I have been correcting broken hyperlinks, but still the pages are not published, though i have been loading the and i ma able to see them on the cP, of LP.
Why is that?

2: I still have an issue with the links in between my webs, the links inbetween the subewebs that are addon webs at the same time, do not seem to work.

3: cannot find where to change the css, so not to view undelined the links on firefox.IE works fine!!

Please advise!!

Tip 1 :- Space Saver:-
When you create blocks or items of text (such as bullet-points with the <LI> tag) and want a new font to highlight your list, use only one <FONT> tag to style the entire list.

Tip 2:- How to use a hover button within a framed page

By Clicking on a hover button in one frame you can change the contents within another frame. To do this simply add the following code to the list of parameters between the <applet> and >/applet> tags.
