In the FrontPage Tips Post at the beginning of this section, the final tip states -

"Password protection:
Here at LunarPages, using cPanel to apply password protection to a folder does not seem to bother FrontPage. This means you can either use the cPanel method of password protection or the FrontPage method (create a FrontPage subweb, change browsing permissions, and create one or users with passwords.) The cPanel method has the advantage of not requiring you to create a FrontPage subweb."

I am having trouble creating a subweb for password protection so I would like to know how to do so without a subweb. In the cPanel "Passsword Protect Directories" section I only see the high level "WWW" folder (directory). How do you password protect a lower level folder only? (You might guess that I am not a very technical computer user.)

Thanks,
David

It's a little confusing, but you need to open the public_html folder by clicking on its folder icon. This will show you the sub-folders in your web site.

Then select the sub-folder you wish to protect by clicking on its name.

Thanks for your response, Rick.

It certainly is confusing. When I look in File Manager, I see all my directories, folders, files, pages, images, everything. When I look in Password Protect Directories I cannot find any of my web site files, folder, pages or anything familiar. I do see lot of _vti_this and that files but nothing I want to protect. I am definitely clicking on the public_html folder icon (and every other icon) but nothing familiar appears.

What am I doing wrong? I am very new at this Password Protect thing.

Thanks again,
David

Your web site files available to the public are located in the public_html folder along with the special FrontPage folders you mention (the ones with names starting with the underscores.) The folders are listed first so be sure to look down the list. This is when viewing in File Manager.

When viewing in Password Protect Directories you will only see folders, because only folders can be password protected.

To make a file protected, save it in a password protected folder.

So in your FrontPage web, you may need to make a new sub-folder and move the desired files into it. Then go to cPanel and password protect your new folder.

Hi Rick,

I made a Protected folder and put some files in. The club is testing it now and it seems to be working. Thanks for your help.
