Some time ago I posted here that I was having trouble importing my site onto a new computer. I gave up on it for a while and just used a laptop for everything. I somehow managed to finally get it to start importing the site but I'm getting an error message that

"the URL .htaccess is invalid. It may refer to a nonexistant file or folder or refer to a current file or folder that is not in the current web."

Is there a way to remove the blue arrow before publishing remote to local so that Fontpage does not publish these files. This would also help with the larger files such as SMF forum. I don't need the forum published locally and would like to remove that file as well. If I right click the .htaccess file it says delete but I don't want to accidentally delete it from the website. Does anyone understand this problem and is there a way to work around it? Thanks

Instead of attempting to publish Remote to Local, close the site on your computer. Then open the site on the server by selecting the File menu and choosing Open Site.. Open web address http://yourdomain.com.

The site on the server is now the "Local" site. The "Remote" site will be in a new folder in the file system of your computer.

Because the server site is now the Local site, you should be able to right-click files and choose Don't Publish. Unfortunately you can't set whole folders to Don't Publish so you'll have to go into each SMF folder and multi-select the files to set them to Don't Publish..

When you're ready to publish the site down to your computer, select the File menu and choose Publish Site. Publish using the "File System" option and publish to a new, empty folder in the File System of your computer. Answer "Yes" to create a new web site in the folder. You can ignore the cautionary message that forms and other web components will not work while on your computer (we knew that already.)

I believe the .htaccess file issue will take care of itself, but in any case do not delete .htaccess or the FrontPage extensions will stop working.

Still can't seem to open the site live. Maybe this is a Vista problem because when I select File Menu - Open Site I can't seem to figure out how to open a web address. It seems to only allow me to open existing files on the computer. After initially clicking Open Site, the window opens and displays items in the My Web Sites folder. When I try to type in the address in Site Name at the bottom it tells me that the folder isn't accessible. Is anyone familiar with FP2003 on Windows Vista system?

I don't think it's a Vista issue.

After File... Open Site... in the Site Name box type http://yourdomain.com (don't forget the http://).

You can also open the site live by using IE to browse to the home page then selecting the IE file menu and choosing Open with MS FrontPage.

Still having problems.
When I go to the site through IE the file menu either gives me Open or Edit with Microsoft Office Frontpage. I tried both with no luck.
Using the "Open" option only seems to go to the website. Using "Edit with Microsoft Office Frontpage" does open and allow me to edit with FP but the option for Publish Site is grayed out and not accessible. It does allow me to Import but that is where I run into the problem of not being able choose Don't Publish (that option is also grayed out).
So the only thing I can think of is that maybe I'm not opening the site live correctly?

Not sure what's going on, but the Publish option is available only when a "Site" is open.

The Publish option is not available (it is grayed-out) when only a single page is open. That's why the File menu... Open Site should be used, not the File menu... Open.

I gave up on this for a while again, but my laptop that I've been using to update the website is not long for this world so I'm forced to try again and resolve this issue.

I gave up trying to figure out where I went wrong and decided to start over deleting what few files I had gotten onto the new computer.
After going over all of the previous replies everyone gave in trying to help me, particularly Rick's,  I did realize one thing...when I go to the website through IE and choose "Edit with Microsoft Office Frontpage," it is only opening that particular page not the entire site. That appears to be why I can't then choose "publish site" which is grayed out.
So, since I believe my problem (or at least one of the many) is that I'm not opening the site live correctly, can anyone walk me through this again so that "Edit with Microsoft Office Frontpage" opens the entire site and not just that particular page?

Keep in mind that for some reason under the IE file menu I can either choose "Open" or "Edit with Microsoft Office Frontpage"    ---- There is no "Open Site" option
Also - I'm using FTP (no FP extensions)
At this point if I must import the forum and .htaccess files then that's fine - I'll deal with it later.

Thanks once again

Please disregard this post.

I've been at it for the last few hours and I seem to have it done ok. I'm not sure exactly what went right in the trial and error process but I think my problem was trying to import the site via ftp.
I still have to click "no to all" as FP asks whether or not to delete the files from the site that don't exist locally (ex. - .htaccess, etc) but I can deal with this.

Thanks again for everyone's patience and help

(no FP extensions)
That explains why you can't open the site live or publish the site down to your computer. The FP extensions are required for these functions to work.

I just wish I knew what I finally did right! It was a long night of trial and error before I got it. I do know that I was never able to click "don't publish." I had to individually transfer the files and folders to the local computer one at a time.
