After giving up on FP forms, I want to try to use the Advanced Poll in Fantastico. I downloaded it, but don't know where to go from here since I have no experience with php or scripting. I thought it would be as simple as copying and pasting code. My first problem is that it seems to require php 4.1 or higher. This shouldn't be a problem since through cPanel I can enable php 5. Except that warns that enabling it will basically destroy the FP extensions. So is it possible to use this?

I've just about had it with the extensions anyway and have found a 3 part article on removing the aspects of FP that require extensions. I believe I only have to change share borders and link bars, then I can remove the extensions and publish via ftp.

Anyone have experience using php scripts with FPE?

I use PHP scripting on some pages in my FrontPage web without problems.

I also have installed from Fantastico the SMF forum into its own folder within my FrontPage web. If changing to PHP5 breaks the extensions, simply reinstall them in cPanel.

That said, it is a good idea to reduce reliance on the extensions because they are being phased out.

I aslo installed the SMF forum into my members area. I don't remember doing it other than to say that it was very easy and I had no problems. But since downloading the Advanced Poll folder, there don't seem to be any instructions on where to go from here. In the readme file there is only a 2 step instruction. The first step is " Upload all php files in ASCII-mode to your server. Give write permissions to the webserver on the configuration files." I', not sure what that means.

Should I first add it to my frontpage web on my home computer or create a new folder through cPanel file manager and upload to that?

There is also a second folder and readme file which if I understand it directs me how to "Call the install script from your browser -> http://www.yourURL.com/poll/install.php"
so I assume there are more detailed instructions once it has been loaded.
I'm also hoping once istalled, that I don't have to have a seperate page for the poll; that I can place it on a specific part of the index page of my subdomain.

I usually use Fantastico to install PHP scripts into a new folder on the server. Typically FrontPage doesn't even know about the script. There's usually no reason to have it on your home computer, but if you want, you can copy the folder back down.

The online updates would need to take place on the server because they need PHP to run.

Can you tell me how you install from fantastico straight to the server? I see in my LP file manager that there is a folder named .fantasticodata. I assume it was created when I downloaded the SMF forum. I still can't remember how I installed that and got it working.
Can I create a folder in FP named .fantasticodata, move the program into that folder, publish then just delete the folder from FP?
Thanks

When I installed the SMF forum from Fantastico, I chose a folder name and Fantastico installed the SMF forum directly into the folder on the server. Note that the folder should be not already existing and it will be inside the public_html web folder.

If you choose to download and install manually, create a new folder on the server inside the public_html folder and install from there.
