I am planning to build Web pages and Wiki pages that include maps. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good source (such as Google, Mapquest, Maptech, etc.) for both general (town & highway) and topographic (landform) maps? They need to be free of charge, so I don't mind their logo on the map somewhere. The maps can be either "live" from a server (allowing the visitor to pan and zoom) or "static" (I paste in a copy).

I don't want to cut and paste maps and then get into copyright troubles. For one set of maps, I'd like a regional overview map (say, northeastern US), one or two smaller scale maps zooming in to more detail, and finally a closeup topo quad sheet where they can see the hiking trails and campsites. It would be nice to be able to annotate the maps with push-pins or an arrows "we parked here, we camped here, we ran into moonshiners here, etc.".

What maps sources satisfy these requirements? I see other Web pages with maps from various sources, but I don't know if the site is paying a fee (this is a noncommercial site for a small group). As an alternative, are there any good map servers I could run that serve the same function (very limited coverage, and what are the map data sources?)? Any suggestions? Thanks!

I know Google Maps has an API you might be able to work with:

http://www.google.com/apis/maps/

Not sure if it would do exactly what you need to do, but might be worth a shot.  Thumbs Up

Well, it sounds like I'd be violating the ToS on the free Google Maps for the particular site I described (the site is not public; although it is not pay-for-play, it is password-controlled access). I would probably have to use the for-pay Enterprise version, which is massive overkill for a site with a dozen or so visitors. I could probably use the free version for my main site, which is publicly accessible (if I can think of any reason to have a map on it). Looking at the regular Google maps, I see "Link to this page", which may prove useful (I'll have to play with it -- it looks like it will embed a map into a page using an iframe).

A not-as-pretty alternative would be to just have several links to map sites, if I can specify the coordinates and scale of each map. Anyone out there using maps in this way?
