Further questions about addon domains.

I would think this would be a common question, so it's probably been answered elsewhere, but I have not found it.

I had to switch an existing name from a previous registrar as they were going to start over a hundred dollars - forced reselling.  I had less than 30 days to deal with it.  Fortunately, I have got the name registration part changed to Lunar tucows registrar and web space signed up under the temporary account.  Now that I've got most of the site transferred across, the question becomes how to make the web space switch.

With the temporary account, I don't have a "primary" domain.  Looking at how addon domains work, and thinking towards future "cleanliness", would it work to make all the domains (if any future ones) as addons?  Otherwise, under public_html, there would be some primary folders mixed with addon folders.  Making them all addons, would make all first level folders as the addon names.

However, are there any problems with not having a "primary" domain?  I saw something about e-mail, but it said each domain should work individually.  What about redirection, parked domains, or any other issues that I probably don't have now, but something to think about?

I've asked support about how to change name servers, but have not heard back for several days.  I'm not sure if I bothered them, or my original question about registrar transfer was "closed"?  I just like to know ahead of time so there's no crisis when I get in the middle of it.  Some of the help and comments are outdated since there are now 10 free addons.

How do I setup/change the domain to lunarpages?  Do I need to get support to do something or do I just add it in the cpanel.  Not really understanding the mechanisms, I'm not sure what it does.  Here is what I imagine it does.  Adding a domain name in the panel sets up a "potentially" resolved name and where the space should go.  You could have any number (up to 10?) of real and bogus names.  Once you change the registrar's nameservers to point to lunarpages, it looks for any names and if it happens to be one you set up, it knows where to get the webpages.  But, something seems needed additionally so wrong names aren't added to accounts that don't have rights to them?

Another issue I asked support early on is to set up for PHP5 since this is the ideal time for testing differences.  The cpanel still says PHP4.  What do I need to do to change this?

Here is some helpful info on domains:

http://www.lunarforums.com/forum/index.php?topic=21716.msg165854#msg165854

http://desk.lunarpages.com/faq.php?do=article&articleid=50

I am not sure about not having a primary domain. Add on domains function as separate sites and their files are located in separate folders so I dont see why you couldnt do that with all the domains you speak of.

As for email:

You can create an unlimited number of email addresses for addon
domains, parked domains, and subdomains. The email addresses for these
can be created in the Mail section of your site's cPanel, under
Add/Remove Addresses. The addon, parked, or subdomain to create the
email address in must be selected from the drop down box shown while
creating a new address.

Nameservers can be changed at the registrars control panel. If it is Tucows it is : https://manage.opensrs.net and you would use your Cpanel username and password (the original not the recent new ones) When you submitted a support ticket did you get an auto reply with a ticket number ? If so please provide that so we may look into why you havent gotten a reply.

To transfer a domain name to Lunarpages you would just send in that request to sales@lunarpages.com with your name, primary domain name on account, username, password, and last four digits of credit card on the account (for security purposes) and authorization to charge your card and also advise if you would like domain privatization or not. (available for $7.95 per yr.) Lunarpages can
become the registrar for .com, .net, .org, .name, .us, .ca,
.co.uk, .biz, and .info domains. There is a one time transfer fee of $7.95.

If you need PHP 5 and your server has PHP 4 you will have to send a ticket to support@lunarpages.com to request being moved to a server that has PHP 5.

I hope this was helpful,

I just added on a new add on domain. Nice and simple.

1. purchase the domain for 2.99 (current promotion price) on the modify domain page.

2. go to cpanel and add that domain name to the add-on. First one is Free!

Perfect.  That is exactly what I needed.  Too bad the promo price isn't still in effect though.  Oh well.

Question though...  when I finished step 2 in cpanel, I received a message stating that my newdomain could be accessed at newdomain.olddomain.com, but what I want is to access newdomain directly at newdomain.com.  Did I do something wrong?  Or perhaps the new domain can be accessed both directly and indirectly through the old domain?

Edit:  Answer to my own question: A little patience pays off.  LunarPages has very quickly set up my new domain, so it was easy to discover the answer on my own.  For anyone else who might be wondering, the answer is that I can access the site BOTH at newdomain.olddomain.com  AND newdomain.com.  Cool!  Thanks LP for the quick setup.  Thumbs Up

Thanks,
Ron

P.S. to LunarPages:  you might consider adding something on the LunarPages site that makes it easy to register new domain names.  I mean it is easy, but not immediately obvious, (unless I missed something which wouldn't be the first time).

Thanks RandyT.  Maybe I didn't wait long enough as I had seen the whois was transferred, and then yesterday I received an e-mail saying the transfer was complete.  The Modify Domain area now has the name added.

I'm not sure how the add-on domain works, but the temporary subdomain I setup from lunar pages until transfering the name now has two subdomain names added in front.  So, may need a primary name if don't want a long list.  Of course, probably only relevant in the control panel.

They are in the process of PHP5 transfer, so that may have something to do with some issues since the domain name exists, now.

Been hosting here for a bit, and decided to expand my horizons, so I bought an additional domain hoping to host two sites under one account - an addon domain.  Try as I might, and so far as I can tell, I've followed every example I could find on these here forums to the T.  No matter what I do, the new domain always brings me to the main page of my base site.  I've added the new domain and removed the new domain several times to try to kick it into working, and one time it seemed to work, but my original site name was still part of the URL as a subdomain.  Let's say for example these are two sites that I would very much prefer to keep 100% separate to the end user, eg. familysite.com and adultsite.com.  Typing in adultsite.com and being directed to adultsite.familysite.com is exactly what I'm trying to avoid.  Likewise, anyone poking around familysite.com and stumbling into the adultsite subdomain would also be undesirable Smile  Is there any way to do this, am I overlooking something simple, is the addon procedure for my server on the fritz, or would I have to purchase another hostig plan for this new site in order to be completely sure?  Thanks Smile

Hey Zhayton,

I am sorry you are having issues getting your new add on domain to work properly.
Here is the procedures I followed for one of mine which worked perfectly and resolves to its own url:

To add the addon domain:
Please make sure the name servers are changed with your registrar to the nameservers assigned to you. They would be the same as the primary domain is using. They can be changed before or after adding the domain. See our tutorials on nameservers at http://lunarpages.com/tutorials/

To add this through your cPanel. Choose the menu option "Add-On Domains"

New Domain Name: the name of the domain (ex: yourdomain.com)

Username/directory/subdomain: the FOLDER you wish for the domain to point towards (ex: yourdomain)

NOTE: simply the name of the folder you want the domain's content to be stored will be sufficient. It can be a folder that already exists or make up a name and it will create the folder for you.

Password: password for your account (*recommend same as cPanel)

Be sure to wait a couple of minutes for the page to load after you create them. It takes a few minutes from when you click on add for a confirmation screen to appear.

After you upload the files and content to the new folder and domain propagation is complete (24 to 48 hours or less) it should work and resolve to its own url and the subdomain version.
If you still can't get it to work feel free to drop an email to support@lunarpages.com so we can figure out what is going on and get it sorted out for you.

I hope this helps.

Almost sounds like the new domain is slight of hand of a sub-domain. Confused  At our present site we have scottieluvr.com  and in there one of the folders is public_html then within those folders are her main site and folders and another folder called vernsdidj.  Now within the vernsdidj folder are all sorts of folders, ico files, folders for the website for my subdomain and how it's laid out, etc.  It's a SUB domain of scottieluvr.com  aka http://vernsdidj.scottieluvr.com  there is no "www" in front as www is also considered a sub-domain of sorts.   So when does a sub-domain become a domain?  Looks like if I wanted http://www.vernsdidj.com  as example I would need to have a full blown domain site, and not one with a sub-domain.  Right?

Hey Darth, think I got this answered for you in another thread - but it you still have any issues, feel free to ask.  If you wanted to host the secondary web site as an addon domain - you could use the easy to use addon domain option right there in your control panel.  That should do all the hard work for you.  Thumbs Up

Yes you did, Mitch, Thanks! Yep  So, even with the present structure, the folder that is currently a sub domain would/could become it's OWN domain with a unique domain pointer.  *elluva deal!! Applause

Now, with my vernsdidj.scottieluvr.com  website, I use a registered domain (with one email "only") that I have set up for receiving mail from that website to my email client of Thunderbird.  I use the OE (Microsoft) for the main emails.  The site is http://www.didgeridooconnection.com  and basically it is just a 1 year domain registration with 1 email from the folks at eye_Power_Web.com  (off a bit on spelling Grinning) and costs me under $8.00 for one year.  So I could either redo the website (versdidj.com)  with myname @versdidj.com  and make it alot simpler, or keep the domain name, and just pay "them" for a yearly renewal for the email portion?  I would assume that a registered domain would be able to have it's own emails set up.

This thread is out of control and confusing.

The question is how to purchase an add-on domain but nothing in this thread told me how to do so.

How to set up your newly purchased or pre-existing domain as an add-on to your existing hosting account is another question entirely.

I will answer the original question with how I just purchased a domain name through LP, this is just the purchase:
1) log in to your account.
2) click the "Manage Domain" icon between "Pay Bills" and "Control Panel" icons.
3) just below the icon you just clicked will appear a gray button with the text "Purchase New Domain", click it!

Be aware that there is no sales transaction during this process, I am assuming that it will bill your credit card on file, but the process fails to say so, I just submitted a ticket with that exact question.

It would seem only proper to include a sales transaction in this process to give the customer the opportunity to confirm that they want to use the credit card on file, or to use another if they so choose.

It was not immediately clear to me how to go about purchasing a new domain through LP as an existing customer and the process might warrant being on the front page of LP, perhaps a "Purchase a domain through LP" button, during that process you ask if the customer is currently hosting a site at LP, and would they like it as an add-on, etc.

This would be the way to register a domain if you have a credit card on file.  If not, then just drop an e-mail to sales@lunarpages.com and we can walk you through the steps on how to get this done.  Also if you want to use your newly registered domain name as your free domain for life send us an e-mail at the same address and let us know.

So a client has a site, with one web address registed and hosted with Lunarpages. There are 2 other web addresses that the client would like to use and have refer to the same site...

Ideally they'll all point to the same files with only the root web address name changing.. i.e.

www.webaddress1.com/index.htm
www.webaddress2.co.uk/index.htm
www.webaddress3.com/index.htm

And all users get the same experience with only the root web address name changing.

It feels surely possible in this day and age or is this actually impossible and holy grail talk? The add-on domain functionality sounds like it may work, but it does seem to suggest this is used for different sites with different content hosted in the same space. I hope I've been clear, would appreciate the assistance in appearing knowledgeable with my client Smile even if it was with LP support Smile

I do this like so:

www.mydomain.com - the main account, it points to my web root folder

Then make add-ons:

www.mydomain.net
www.mydomain.biz

As add-on domains to the main account, they will create subdirectories in the web root, no worries, leave them there and empty, but add two redirect rules to redirect www.mydomain.net to www.mydomain.com, and the same for the third, redirect www.mydomain.biz to www.mydomain.com.

I should note that when the redirect happens, the URL in your visitors browser will change to www.mydomain.com, the target of the redirect.

I used different top level domains here, .com, .net, and .biz, but the same method would apply to your differing second level domain names, ie. www.mydomain-1.com and www.mydomain-2.com.
