Further questions about addon domains.

I would think this would be a common question, so it's probably been answered elsewhere, but I have not found it.

I had to switch an existing name from a previous registrar as they were going to start over a hundred dollars - forced reselling.  I had less than 30 days to deal with it.  Fortunately, I have got the name registration part changed to Lunar tucows registrar and web space signed up under the temporary account.  Now that I've got most of the site transferred across, the question becomes how to make the web space switch.

With the temporary account, I don't have a "primary" domain.  Looking at how addon domains work, and thinking towards future "cleanliness", would it work to make all the domains (if any future ones) as addons?  Otherwise, under public_html, there would be some primary folders mixed with addon folders.  Making them all addons, would make all first level folders as the addon names.

However, are there any problems with not having a "primary" domain?  I saw something about e-mail, but it said each domain should work individually.  What about redirection, parked domains, or any other issues that I probably don't have now, but something to think about?

I've asked support about how to change name servers, but have not heard back for several days.  I'm not sure if I bothered them, or my original question about registrar transfer was "closed"?  I just like to know ahead of time so there's no crisis when I get in the middle of it.  Some of the help and comments are outdated since there are now 10 free addons.

How do I setup/change the domain to lunarpages?  Do I need to get support to do something or do I just add it in the cpanel.  Not really understanding the mechanisms, I'm not sure what it does.  Here is what I imagine it does.  Adding a domain name in the panel sets up a "potentially" resolved name and where the space should go.  You could have any number (up to 10?) of real and bogus names.  Once you change the registrar's nameservers to point to lunarpages, it looks for any names and if it happens to be one you set up, it knows where to get the webpages.  But, something seems needed additionally so wrong names aren't added to accounts that don't have rights to them?

Another issue I asked support early on is to set up for PHP5 since this is the ideal time for testing differences.  The cpanel still says PHP4.  What do I need to do to change this?

Perfect.  That is exactly what I needed.  Too bad the promo price isn't still in effect though.  Oh well.

Question though...  when I finished step 2 in cpanel, I received a message stating that my newdomain could be accessed at newdomain.olddomain.com, but what I want is to access newdomain directly at newdomain.com.  Did I do something wrong?  Or perhaps the new domain can be accessed both directly and indirectly through the old domain?

Edit:  Answer to my own question: A little patience pays off.  LunarPages has very quickly set up my new domain, so it was easy to discover the answer on my own.  For anyone else who might be wondering, the answer is that I can access the site BOTH at newdomain.olddomain.com  AND newdomain.com.  Cool!  Thanks LP for the quick setup.

P.S. to LunarPages:  you might consider adding something on the LunarPages site that makes it easy to register new domain names.  I mean it is easy, but not immediately obvious, (unless I missed something which wouldn't be the first time).

Been hosting here for a bit, and decided to expand my horizons, so I bought an additional domain hoping to host two sites under one account - an addon domain.  Try as I might, and so far as I can tell, I've followed every example I could find on these here forums to the T.  No matter what I do, the new domain always brings me to the main page of my base site.  I've added the new domain and removed the new domain several times to try to kick it into working, and one time it seemed to work, but my original site name was still part of the URL as a subdomain.  Let's say for example these are two sites that I would very much prefer to keep 100% separate to the end user, eg. familysite.com and adultsite.com.  Typing in adultsite.com and being directed to adultsite.familysite.com is exactly what I'm trying to avoid.  Likewise, anyone poking around familysite.com and stumbling into the adultsite subdomain would also be undesirable   Is there any way to do this, am I overlooking something simple, is the addon procedure for my server on the fritz, or would I have to purchase another hostig plan for this new site in order to be completely sure?  Thanks

Almost sounds like the new domain is slight of hand of a sub-domain.   At our present site we have scottieluvr.com  and in there one of the folders is public_html then within those folders are her main site and folders and another folder called vernsdidj.  Now within the vernsdidj folder are all sorts of folders, ico files, folders for the website for my subdomain and how it's laid out, etc.  It's a SUB domain of scottieluvr.com  aka http://vernsdidj.scottieluvr.com  there is no "www" in front as www is also considered a sub-domain of sorts.   So when does a sub-domain become a domain?  Looks like if I wanted http://www.vernsdidj.com  as example I would need to have a full blown domain site, and not one with a sub-domain.  Right?

Yes you did, Mitch, Thanks!   So, even with the present structure, the folder that is currently a sub domain would/could become it's OWN domain with a unique domain pointer.  *elluva deal!!

Now, with my vernsdidj.scottieluvr.com  website, I use a registered domain (with one email "only") that I have set up for receiving mail from that website to my email client of Thunderbird.  I use the OE (Microsoft) for the main emails.  The site is http://www.didgeridooconnection.com  and basically it is just a 1 year domain registration with 1 email from the folks at eye_Power_Web.com  (off a bit on spelling ) and costs me under $8.00 for one year.  So I could either redo the website (versdidj.com)  with myname @versdidj.com  and make it alot simpler, or keep the domain name, and just pay "them" for a yearly renewal for the email portion?  I would assume that a registered domain would be able to have it's own emails set up.

This would be the way to register a domain if you have a credit card on file.  If not, then just drop an e-mail to sales@lunarpages.com and we can walk you through the steps on how to get this done.  Also if you want to use your newly registered domain name as your free domain for life send us an e-mail at the same address and let us know.
