Sorted! It was DAP's Browser Integration that was causing the problem. I just disabled it and the Extract menu appeared.

I got lunarpages yesterday and the first thing I want to do is install the phpbb -- then I saw this thread and now I'm wondering whether I should do a manual installation.  it looks to me that I can easily install the bb thru cpanel.   My guess is that if I do that I'll not be able to use the mysql for anything else, but manual installation would allow me to have chat with the same mysql database?

I recommend that you install your phpbb with your c-panel before you do anything else. It will only work if the database is empty. Setting the db up manually is a major headache, as I found out myself. (I installed mine manually before I realised it could be done with c-panel... ah well I should've read all the blurb first!!)

Once phpbb is set up, you can still use your MySql for other things - just make sure your table prefixes are different.

Hi there Maggie.

Setting up PHPBB through C-Panel will not prevent you from using the database for other things, however, each of the auto installs from C-Panel requires a fresh database, so unless you have the Voyager account, you will need to purchase extra databases if you want to use more than one auto install that is reliant on having a database.

The setup proceedure for PHPBB manually is very straight forward really, and to be honest, whilst I now consider myself a moderate level user, the first time I did the manual installation, it was the first thing I had done with PHP, first thing with an online database, first program installation on my Lunar Pages account.

As long as you go step by step it need not be a problem.  The other thing of course is you must have a database set up, however, this is very simply done through C-Panel.  As a recommendation, the C-Panel X skin is easy to use.  Have a look at your C-Panel, if it is blue in colour and says C Panel 6 near the top, I would recommend you email support@lunarpages.com and request a change to the C-Panel 'X' theme.  This is much better in layout, and easier to use.

If you find any part of the How To: article confusing, let me know and I'll explain it.  This will also help me to modify the tutorial to help make it easier for other people.

I'm planning to change host for my site. I have a phpBB forum which I have hacked mercilessly and I want to transfer it to my new site at lunarpages. My current host has cPanel 8.7.0-RELEASE 26 which includes the standard backup facilities including "Download a SQL Database Backup" and "Restore an SQL DB".

Will the following work?

1. download by FTP my forum files to my hard drive.
2. run "Download a SQL Database Backup" to store a compressed copy of my forum mySQL database to my hard drive.
3. upload by FTP my forum files to my lunarpages site.
4. use "Restore an SQL DB" to upload and extract my forum database to my new site.

Will the forum now work or do I need to do something else?

Perhaps I could introduce a lower level of dullness (aka ignorance) into this group. Surprised   If I can install and setup a phpBB from cPanel, why would I need to manually install phpBB?  I can only guess that the LunarPages version isn't the most recent?  Confused

Hi Minding,

Well, if you only have one database and install something like the Advanced Guestbook or osCommerce, you then couldn't install phpBB automatically.  At this point, you would have to manually install it into tables in the database to have it on the account.  Otherwise, you would need to purchase an additional database to install it automatically, and that cost $1.00 per month per database.

OK Hush...

When you said "hopefully" in your initial post, I was hoping you had already started the thread for us "unfortunately nots".

Errors after clicking Start Install include:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Access denied for user: ...../mysql4.php on line 48

phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database


Tried everything I can think of.  
Followed your instructions to the letter.  
So what did I miss?  Confused

Addendum: (Haven't typed an addendum for awhile...!)
1) Yes, I did create a new db (this could be a HowTo of it's own).
2) Yes, I did create a new user and add it to the new db (with full access).

I installed a forum at my website at http://www.langchat.com

Here I want to add some tips that you can follow BEFORE installation.

If you want to add a cool feature that is used by yahoo and msn whereby the user is presented with a word picture that he has to see and type before registering a new user.  This will prevent automated registrations on your forum.

To install this in phpbb do the following before calling intall.php
copy the visual_confirmation.tar.gz file from the contrib directory to your phpBB folder and extract it.
I dont know if you can do it after you have called install.php

Other cool features that you can install at any time.
You can change the style and colors of your forums by downloading templates from
http://www.phpbb.com/styles/

You can also find many mods (hacks) that you can install at
http://www.phpbb.com/mods/

My forum sends email from shankar@danzig.lunarpages.com, I tried
setting email from shankar@langchat.com but it is then sending it from
shankar@langchat.com@danzig.lunarpages.com.  Is there any way to
rectify this?

can I set the reply to address as shankar@yahoo.com because I am not using my website's email accounts?

of course all emails mentioned here are fictious in case some one mines this forum for emails Smile
