Several people have requested information over the last little while on how to restrict which email program their webmail users are allowed to use.

Here is one solution that you can use:

- Login to CPanel

- Click on "Subdomains"

- You will see a blank form to fill out with one next to it saying ".domainname.com". In that blank spot enter what you want to use as your subdomain. For this example, I am goign to call it "webmail".

It may take a minute so be patient!

- Once you get a confirmation message, click the "go back" link (do not use the back button!).

- In the line below the one you just filled out, select the webmail.yourdomain.com in the box and click on "Setup Redirection".

In the page that loads next enter one of the following URLs for the program you want users to be able to access.
Updated: All the links MUST have the trailing slash to work
Neomail:
EDIT: Neomail is no longer offered

Horde:
http://www.jokeawhenever.com:2095/horde/

Squirrel Mail:
http://www.jokeawhenever.com:2095/3rdparty/squirrelmail/

Click on "Save".

- Try and access webmail.yourdomain.com Login with your username and password, you should automatically be at the program of your choice!

Just copy the form content and put it somewhere on your own site.

You would have to look at the source code and figure out how the form works. Then copy the HTML code (minus the go back link) and put it on your own page. You could in theory create a changepass.html page which is the same as that one, just remove the link to go back.

The user may have to authenticate. When they post the script. I'm not positively sure.

Try playing around with it (copy the change password page to your server and update the form to point to the script using:2095/

Its something you'd have to just play around with.

i got so close but...

I read the pages and found the cgi. I had to chaneg that to the full address and not just /whatever. I don't know if it actually changed anything because i used the current password as a test but that doesn't matter. It went to another page with the return link.

lol... well I dunno what to suggest then! You would have to create something extremely low level to support that! Smile

Is it really an issue if users have a subtle link that they might be able to follow to use the other email programs?

If users use multiple programs, no email is lost etc. I personally switch between them depending on how complicated a feature set I want to use. They all correctly display the contents of my email box.

Is the login pop-up window a secure login? If not, is secure login possible? I tried with an https:// but it didn't work.

Hi Daemonfly,

The secure logins would have https and you would change the 2095 to 2096 for the port.

For example:

https://www.bestgarden.net:2096/horde/index.php/

I hope this helps.

I created the subdomain webmail.nhclu.org as discussed.
I created the redirect as discussed:

Quote
SubDomain Redirection
webmail.nhclu.org is currently being redirected to http://www.nhclu.org:2095/neomail/neomail.pl/

However, when I enter webmail.nhclu.org into my  browser, the error message is webmail.nhclu.org could not be found.

It seems as if the subdomain isn't registered.  Any ideas ?

This happens with neomail, horde, and squirrelmail.
