A quick question: I have decided to do away with my old board, and keep the new. Earlier, Danielle said something about changing the config.php file within the smf folder, but I can't seem to find it. I've gone through all the folders within the smf folder, but can't seem to find it, yet the board seems fine. Is that possible? Can I use the one from the old board, or modify it somehow?
Thanks!

Hi Mithrandread,
What are you wanting to change on the file? Did you want to change the name of the folder to the name of the prior forum folder then rather than change the link on your website to point to the new location? Really, it is a lot easier to keep the current forum name and just redirect people from the prior forum url to the new one as well as update your site links to point to the new location. If you really do want to change the folder's name, I'll have to test doing that myself as I'm not certain what all needs changed. I did it a few times before, but I didn't log/track what I had to change specifically.
Thanks.

Danielle, Yes, I wanted keep the old name, and the old link. I guess I was naive enough to think that it was simply a matter of changing the name of the SMF folder to the name of the old board. Just to make myself clear: The path to the old board was http://dreadhead7.com/courtyard The path to the new board is http://dreadhead7.com/smf I want to change the "smf" to "courtyard", so I don't have to go and change any links on my site. I guess that's where the issue of the config.php file comes in. Since I don't have one in my smf folder, can I just use the one from the old board, and make some changes if I have to? As I said, I was naive enough to think that this would be simple... Thanks!

I did the same as you Mithrandread and was able to rename the folder after removing phpbb. It is not that simple (I think) but it's not impossible. You would have to go into the admin panel to update the paths for Themes and Attachments and such.

Well, I did it, and everything seems fine. I deleted the old folder in cpanel, but did not dump it. Then, I changed the paths for the folders and themes, and was able to use the old links on my site to reach the new board. When I was sure that everything was ok, I dumped the old folder. So far, so good! Thanks a bunch!

I'm happy it was that easy to do it for you. The last time I did it, I was moving from one server with one paths to another with completely different paths, and a bit tricker than just a 1 folder change. Your new forum is looking good Mithrandread, too.

Mithrandread, it looks like you need to alter the path to your smilies ( in (I'm guessing ) your admin section if its anything like PhpBB ) Your newly relocated forum is looking for your smilies in /smf/Smileys/default/

Danielle, thanks for the compliment! Pete, I'm getting on that right now. I'd forgotten about the smileys. *smileys path fixed.

Hi
Thanks for the HOWTO. I have just one problem (and it's probably really stupid) which is that when I run the conversion script from phpbb to smf, it wipes the details I had just put in for the admin.
So how can I add a new admin to smf if I don't have a login with admin privileges? (Is there some php file I can hack to do it manually?)
Thanks

It should be the admin login that was on your phpBB board instead as that is what it changes the admin details to upon conversion, so just login as the phpBB board username and password on the SMF board for the admin, then re-add your other admin or change the username and password for the admin to what you'd like instead.

Hi, I'm not converting from phpBB. I'm just trying to install SMF. I've tried the installation 3 times now, with the same results. After step 7 in your instructions, I get the message:
The installer was unable to access the "[mydatabase name]" database. With some hosts, you have to create the database in your administration panel before SMF can use it. Some also add prefixes - like your username - to your database names.
The database I've created for each try at the installation (and I've tried 3 different ones) are new MySQL ones. I know their names and users and passwords. I know that the database is there and spelled right with the correct user and password, because I'm not getting the "Cannot connect to the MySQL database server with the supplied data: access denied error.
I'd love some help.
Mark
Whoops! Figured it out: I hadn't associated my database user with the database. Duh.

it looks to me like you haven't added the user to the database, after you've created the user this needs to be done... check this: http://www.lunarforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=21575this is the part i think your missing: Adding A Database User To Your Database:A common mistake made by users, is forgetting to add their users to their databases, to do this you want to pay attention to the following part of the page your seeing: in the drop down boxes you must select your database user, and your database name, and click the ' Add User to DB' Button In this case The LP Username is nverd02 which is why before the database name and username you see nverd02_, it is very important that you take note of this, otherwise your Scripts wont connect to your database, as their will be authorization problems.
