I can answer #2: Yes, you will have two separate forums independant of each other.

As for #1? I honestly don't know. I've been looking in the SMF forums and still am not sure.

Try here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/readme_convert.html#convert

And here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=26551.0

I converted one a while back but I also converted it from an Access DB to a MySQL DB when moving it and the website here. I will try to locate my notes and post back asap unless someone else comes by and has the answer.

If you want to convert from phpbb to SMF, yes, provide the name of the phpbb database when asked.

If you want two separate forums then create a new databse under Mysql in Cpanel and provide that name.

I believe they can coexist in one database for testing since the smf tables are usually named starting with smf_ but I wouldn't recommend permanently running 2 different forums from the same database.

katrina1, thank-you very much for your help so far. Apologies for not thanking you sooner. Work got in the way and have not had time to proceed further until now.

I have now managed to successfully install smf_1-0-7 onto the server.

A couple of hopefully, final questions if you don't mind:
The next step is to convert my phpBB forum for use SMF. I am unsure which converter I should use:

This one: phpbb2_to_smf.php

or the Beta mentioned in a previous post above. Which can be obtained in this thread:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=38966.0

My phpBB forum is: phpBB 2.0.19

After conversion, if successful. Is my phpBB forum still safe and unaffected.

Thanks for your time and patience.

Sorry. Work and home have been pretty busy for me too.

You'll want to use the phpbb2_to_smf.php converter.

You will want to delete the phpbb forum or you will need to keep it up to date to the latest version. It can still be exploited. The current version is 2.0.20.

The phpbb forum should not be affected by the conversion at all but a backup (Cpanel, Backups or phpmyadmin, export) before doing it is always a nice thing to have to make you feel warm and fuzzy.  Smile

Many thanks katrina1, much appreciated.

After I do the conversion to SMF and if everything is OK, I plan on disabling/deleting the phpBB forum.

I have done exactly what you have posted 8 times over several different days and so I came here looking for any help. But like I said there is nothing any different here.

But this is what I get every time I try thids:
Quote
The installation of SMF in the path you specified is not a version this converter can deal with. If it is older than SMF 1.0, you need to upgrade first. If it is newer, you need to use a different converter

Did anyone else get this? The version of SMF is the latest available. The Convert .php is the one that is currently posted on the smf site.

Any suggestions.

I did the forum and have it running, the old fashion way. By hand  during the weekend. But to transfer all the posts is a little overwelming and actuaully is a little to much to even attemt.

thanx

I'm trying to use the phpBB2 to SMF Converter but I can't log-in: The database password you entered was incorrect. Please make sure you are using the right password (for the SMF user!) and try it again. I added the smf user to the phpbb database in phpadmin, but I still can't log-in  Sad Any ideas? Thanks...

Hi just signed up as searching for phpbb to SMF brought me here  Hiya

I need some help and by the looks of things you guys really know what your doing Yep

I have phpbb already installed www.nufc-forum.com/phpbb and works fine

I have installed smf here www.nufc-forum.com/nufcforum and works fine

However when I try to convert it comes up with an error regarding duplicate posts.  I'll copy the last bit of it as it is HUGE

Quote
'438', '154', '1081806166', '57', 'chrisk11885@yahoo.co.uk', 'they wouldnt have it back if i had it lol', 'emporer_k', '1', '', '82.3.89.125', 'If I had it then it would remain safely locked away where they could never retrieve it.', '6'),

Caused the error:

Duplicate entry '438' for key 1

Everything converts but only a % of the posts.

Hope you guys can help as SMF forums dont seem as if they know  Sad

Hi,

I'm having nothing be problems trying to convert my phpBB board to SMF.  I have tried all of their suggestions including reinstalling everything.  When I try to reinstall the board now (under a different database & folder location) I get a 500 error that says it could not connect to the database.  I'm going completely out of my mind over this.  I've tried deleted version 1.1 and installing 1.0.8 and get a 500 error with that one too.  Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?  My current forum is www.destinationhomework.com/forum.  If the conversion is successful, I'd also like to find a way to keep the same url because the students in my class are the primary users and I don't want them having trouble locating the site.

Any help, greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
K

Hi guys!

I'm really new with all this stuff (MySQL, .php, etc...) and hope that my question wasn't discussed yet and there is a solution for it:
I have installed phpbb2 and smf on my host, in 2 different directories. I have uploaded the convert.php and start it, insert the paths to my SMF and phpBB forums, then write the password in the SMF database password I didn't knew it, but I've opened the settings.php file and from there I've copied the  DB password.
When I click "continue" it says:

Code:
Sorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of phpBB2. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it.

The error MySQL gave was: SELECT command denied to user 'rocketba_smf1'@'localhost' for table 'phpbb_users'

Can you help me solve this problem, I'll be very thankful if you will!

P.S: Do you need the forums links?

Thanks in advance!

Did you read the error in full?

Well I would suggest doing this before you convert on your phpbb board and remove what you don't need. Or Do it after you convert.
Users and Posts have a lot of things attached to them. Such as posts have topics they are in and topics have boards and categories they are in. Users have log data and permissions attached to them.
So doing this before or after would be the only best method to get this done.
