Hi Danielle, I tried to convert over to smf, and was following your instructions. However, when I got to this point: 5. Open a new window in your brower, and now load the page http://yourdomain.com/smf where yourdomain.com is replaced by your domain name and smf is the folder location where you installed the forum. I had a problem. I entered http://dreadhead7.com/smf. Unfortunately, I get an internal server error. What am I doing wrong? I named the folder smf because that was your example, but should I have given it the same name as my current forum? I thought I'd run into problems if I did that. Thanks in advance for your help! ***When I just tried the link, it took me to my 404 Not Found page.

You are on a suPHP server, so you cannot have file permissions of 777 for any files or folders nor 666 for any files or folders. If you log into cPanel, click on File Manager, then on the folder icon next to public_html, then on the folder icon next to smf, then on each file or folder name (not the icon to the left of it but the file or folder name) that has 777 or 666 file permissions to the far right, then click "Change Permissions" link in the upper right hand corner, and uncheck group and world write checkboxes (do not go into the boxes below and change the numbers as you have to uncheck the boxes above instead for it to work), then click change.
Once you've changed all files or folders at 777 to 755 and all files at 666 to 644, then you should be able to install SMF.

After I finish installing, must I go back and reset the permissions to the original?

Danielle, Thanks for all your help! It seems that everything went well, but there is one problem...I can't find my board. For some reason, the phpbb board is still there. Could I just change my smf folder to the same name as the phpbb one? Must I do a search to find my new board? Boy, do I feel dumb right now!

Hi Mithrandread, Pete waves The new board is where you left it. http://www.dreadhead7.com/smf/Easy option is to alter your current links to point there instead of the 'old' forum

Hi Mithrandread, You wouldn't have to reset the permissions after you've changed them, the new values of 755 or 644 should be fine. As for the forum, it would be at http://dreadhead7.com/smf/You can either change your links on your site to point to the new location, or you can delete the phpBB board (the folder) after you verify the conversion is working properly, then after deleting the phpBB folder you can go into SMF itself and change the path in the administration area and also in the config.php file inside the folder itself, then change the folder to the name the phpBB folder had. I would really suggest doing the first of changing your site links to point to the new forum location of http://dreadhead7.com/smf/ rather than the second one as it would involve deleting the phpBB folder (and it is good to have it for a few days at least as a backup to ensure the forum conversion worked fine). Thanks.

True, it might be a good idea for the phpBB to disable it. This can be done by going into the Administration Panel in phpBB, then clicking the "Configuration" link under General Admin, and then clicking the "Yes" radio button next to "Disable board" toward the top, then scrolling down and clicking the "Submit" button.

Thanks Danielle and Pete!
How would I go about customizing the board to make it mine, so to speak? I had an image for my old board. Will I be able to put on the new one? Will I be able to link back to the home page of my site from the board? I agree that it is a good idea to keep the old board for a few days. I'll make a post to let my members know what is going on. After I make changes to the new one, then, I can take down the old board.
Again, thanks!

I have figured out some things with SMF, but I can't figure out from the SMF site how I would go about downloading themes. It's not as straightforward as I expected it to be. Also, how would I go about getting rid of that SMF banner, and replace it with my own forum pic?
I have not disabled my board because I want my members to be able to choose which setup they want. I have put a link to the new board on the old. I didn't want folks to freak out if they went to the old site, and saw the new board. I guess I wanted to prepare them, so to speak.
In the meantime, I have upgraded to 2.0.16 just in case my members want to keep the old board. I have not made up my mind whether I like SMF or not. Maybe if I can mod it up, and make it mine, I'll be more satisfied.

Hi Mithrandread, To download themes, simply go to http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=15620.0 and pick a theme you like, then click on the link to it and get a copy of the archive. After this, go into SMF, click on Admin area to log into it, then click on "Theme and Layout Settings" under Forum Configuration. Click the Browse button and find the downloaded archive (usually a .zip or .gz file), then click Open button in Windows to choose it, then click the Install! button. You will be prompted with "Install a New Theme?" and would choose Yes, then it should install. It is a lot easier to install them as you do it via the package manager than in phpBB in my opinion. To see a list of some of the themes, simply go to http://miraenda.com/ (my site) and look at them in the Theme Picker at the top. As for the header and changing it, I would wait to do this until you've picked the new theme first and then change it on that. After you do install the theme, you can then make it the default by doing this. In the same area as you installed the theme, you'll have the options "Overall forum default:" and "Reset everyone to:" and you can pick the theme there to have as the default and/or reset everyone to it. I hope this helps.

Hi Danielle,
I checked that link, and went all over the place looking for a way to download, and couldn't find any links to download files. I saw lots of thumbnails for themes that I liked, but no way to download. Must I register with the site first?

Hi Mithrandread, Pete waves From the link Danielle provided... http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=15620.0At the top of each sample is generally a link to another thread started by the specific theme author. Either Download Thread Link or just Thread LinkThat takes you to a theme specific thread where you should find the download links ( and often installation instructions )

Pete,
I did that. I followed the links. I even saw the installation instructions. I simply did not see where I could download the files. I have to put it down to either my very poor eyesight, the fact that I'm only using 1.05, and not the 1.1 beta, or something in my browser that isnt working.
I am trying to download the Aqua series by Andrea. Would someone please do me a favor, and check those links (when you get the time), just to make sure that I'm not crazy. It's on the very first page.
Thanks to both of you for your great help!!

You have to register and login before you can see the links.
