One more question for tonight...

I tried installing the CoppermineVis component, ( http://www.joombla.com/ ), but it would not upload directly.  The installation instructions recommend that if this happens it is because the file is too large and to get around the problem by unzipping the package and ftp'ing to the server and using the "install from directory" option.  So I tried that but now get the error:

Another component is already using directory: "/components/com_banners/"

Anyone have any idea what's going on or how to get around it?

So why do I ask here?  Simple, LunarForums has always been a better resource than even the forums dedicated to a specific product.  I've asked over on the support site for CoppermineVis but there has been no response.  Sad considering I paid for this particular component.  Of course I understand if no one here knows what the problem is, but over there I would expect some support.  Even so, I figure my chances are better here than over there.  It's certainly been the case in the past on other products.  LunarForums is simply the best  Thumbs Up

Just wanted to post here the resolution to this problem, and to acknowledge the support Todd provided via the support ticket was very quick and helpful.  Also the problem was not with Copperminevis, but with my understanding of how to install a component via Joomla's alternate installation method of "Install from directory".    Coppermine is now working perfectly for me, and Todd has totally changed my opinion of the copperminevis componet.  I was much too quick to judge it.  My apologies to Todd.

Below is Todd's helpful response to my support ticket.  The only thing I take issue with is his comment about "lower end shared hosting plans".

-------------------------------------
No worries, I would be glad to help you. I see your problem, and its understandable, when you install from directory you need to upload the install files to a directory other than the target you are installing to. The error joomla is feeding you is completely misleading, and doesn't make any sense.

Try uploading the files from the zip to administrator/components/com_installer/com_copperminevis/
Then enter that directory when installing from directory.
also, make sure beforehand to delete components/com_copperminevis/ and administrator/components/com_copperminevis/ if they exist.

Hopefully this fixes the issue and the component will work great for you. I'm sorry about all the inconveniences you've had. The reason you can't install directly from the zip is your upload_max_filesize in PHP.INI is restricted to probably 1 or 2 megs, meaning that you can't upload files 3 megs in size like this component. This happens with some lower end shared hosting plans.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Regards,
Todd
