I'm having a weird issue with Joomla which was installed using Fantastico. Not sure if this is the right place so I won't feel bad if a moderator wants to move this post.

Anyway, when I'm in the area for creating or editing a story, I try to create a hyperlink and I get a blank popup window. This doesn't always happen but it happens enough that it's a major irritant. And since it's intermittent, I have no idea how to track it down. Is anybody else experiencing this? Even better if somebody knew how to fix it but I'm expecting that. Have already posted in Joomla Forums and nobody could help. A screenshot is below so you can see what happened when I selected text and tried to create a link.

Click on the thumbnail and you'll get a fullscreen version.

Hi,
I moved this to the Joomla forum (yes its a bit hidden away)

I have never had this problem.
Have you tried a different browser than firefox?
Do you notice any Javascript warnings?

I have tried it in IE7beta (even the create story didn't work there, but, hey, it's a beta) and Opera on Windows. In Opera, the same thing as happened if I recall correctly. Haven't tried it Opera under Linux (the same thing happens under both Windows and Linux in Firefox). The screenshot was of me using Firefox 2 beta but I previously had it happening under 1.0 and 1.5.

Haven't seen any JavaScript errors in the browser window. I suppose I should be checking the JavaScript Console - forgot it was there. I'll check that and report back.

Ok, this is interesting. Even before clicking on the link I get many JavaScript errors though probably not many of them matter all that much. Rather than include all of them (and cause I'm not sure how to copy and paste all of them), I'll include just the ones that showed up when I clicked the hyperlink button:

How fast is your internet connection?
If your on a slow/bad connection it may not be loading all the javascript.... a long shot.

When you visit the page does it show 'done' in the bottom left of the status bar?

See if any of these links helps you:

http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread.php?t=53886

(especially regarding the "www" issue)

It's a high-speed DSL connection. I typically get above 300 KB/s down and over 40 KB/s up though I haven't checked the upload recently. And yeah, I do get "Done" for both the content page and the Edit Hyperlink window. Thanks for the suggestions.

Leigh: I'm going to check out the threads you suggested. Thanks. I'll report back once I've checked them out. Thanks.

It sounds like the solutions regarding the "www" issue might be your fix, because when I look at that screen shot you gave in your first post, I see you use the "www" in the URL, but in the popup it's the non-www URL, so try that solution given in those links first.

That one worked! I applied the beginning of solution #4 which suggested clearing the cache in the Joomla folder. As soon as I did, the problem disappeared!

It's disappeared before on its own so it could be a coincidence but I'm hopeful.

Thanks, Leigh, you're a lifesaver!

Just as I was about to post, I saw you replied. When I access the URL, I use the address without the www part so it's weird that it then goes to www.plugintolinux.ca anyway. Maybe I'll need to change the live site to www. if it insists on that and the problem doesn't go away permanently.

Oh wow. I just realized what is happening. If I go to administration via the address directly like this: http://plugintolinux.ca/news/adminstrator, it changes it to www.plugintolinux.ca/news/adminstrator/blah/bah/blah as soon as I login and the problem re-emerges.

If I go to http://plugintolinux.ca/news and then click on the Administrator button to login, it doesn't do the change and everything works fine! I just tried it. It all seems to depend on how I enter the administration. Must be a bug in Joomla 1.0.10. I should wait to make sure the problem doesn't re-appear though.

In the configuration my live site is listed as http://plugintolinux.ca/news .

You might want to do a redirect to remedy the problem altogether. Here's the fix for that:
