Will you please share how big it is and how active?  I'm having a scary conversation about it with tech support (I originally asked about premium restore service) and was told:

"While there are no limits set in stone for shared hosting accounts, it is generally about 1% CPU usage on the shared server. As vbulletin is a relatively resource intense application it will significantly limit your ability to have other scripts or services running on the site at the same time without resulting in your domain being suspended."

I know that if my forum gets as popular as I would like, then I move to dedicated...but until then should I be worrying about LP's ability to handle it without me getting over the 1% limit?

Besides google analytics I will not be running any additional scripts or services...so should I be ok?

And is there any way to gauge by forum size or activity when or how it would hit the 1%

...just a tad worried.

Well, vB is known to some to be rather resource intensive - compared with some of the alternatives out there.  I would just be sure that as the support tech mentioned you be careful what other scripts and services you have running on the same account and you might search around the Web to see if there are any hacks, plugins or update you can do to slow down the resource intensiveness of it.

Search the vBulletin forums too here:

I think I remember seeing a few helpful post before when searching for "resource intensive".  Hope that helps!

Yes they've given some tips on how to keep the resources as low as possible - and what things use more - so I've turned off or turned down many of them.

...would definitely like to (hope to) hear from others who have a current vBulletin board running smoothly with no problems Smile

I've been running a vbulletin and vba site for years (2,000+ members).  Usually, it runs fine.  But it is highly frustrating when LunarPages arbitrarily decides that the resource load is too high, then shuts your site off by moving it to a non-production server that is incapable of running vbulletin, then tells you to fix it (while it is on a server that won't allow you to see any results of any "fixing") or move to a much more expensive dedicated server.  I go through this about every year and a half it seems...the funny thing is...I don't add any scripts that would increase the load.

IMO, it all comes down to which tech is working that day.  There is no consistency it seems.  I've even asked tech support about adding certain scripts and I get their approval.  Then, after everything has been running smoothly for a year or more (in my case over a year and a half), bam! Out of the blue, everything they told you previously is forgotten or reversed. I suspect due to just having different techs to work with and lack of communication between them.  I'm currently going through this right now.

I'd consider moving to a different host if it weren't for the fact that for the most part, the techs are pretty cool.  Every once in a while you get that one tech who just drums to a different beat than the rest though.  During that time, I just have to grin and bear it, tell my 2,000+ member base I apologize for the inconvenience and I'm working on a solution as soon as possible.

Thanks for the input.

...and maybe it's telling that no others have replied saying "yes, we run a vbulletin and we've never had an issue"

Just as a side note, I think vBulletin's popularity has died off some too over the past few years - mainly due to the confusing licensing issue.  Also the previous issues with it being a 'bit of a resource hog shouldn't go without notice either.

Apokalupsis, feel free to pass the word along when somebody has either been bad or good to you via the support team to feedbadck@lunarpages.com.  I know it always helps either way (bad and good) to know what peoples strong points are and maybe where they need some work.

So yes, as long as you are very careful - you shouldn't have any issues getting VB up and running here. Smile
