NEWBIE ALERT !!!! Surprised

I just noticed the Fantastico Icon in the control panel and had a few, actually alot of, questions about the message board software.
How exactly does it work, what all is needed to make it work for a small message board, do I run it on my space I allready have at Lunarpages, and can I make a temporary directory to play with it until my other site that I intend to use it on is ready?
Is there a user limitation on this version?

As you can tell I am new to all this, but I am willing to do alot of research to acomplish what ever learning is necassary.
If there's any links you guy's and gal's think would be helpful to me, please feel free to share.

Thanks for your patience,  Jason

Hi Jason,

First of all, this forum itself is phpBB so to see how it works just look at this board.  This board does have a few additional mods (those are addon components not included in the regular installation) such as the quick reply mod and a different skin (the skin is the theme or the design layout) than the default installation, but it is a good example of what a basic phpBB board has for a user.

Not sure about the other questions really as it is an auto installer, you can choose to install it into a folder rather than your public_html directly (public_html is your default homepage section) for a temporary location, and I have not idea about a user limit.  This forum itself has over 10000 members, so unless you plan to have an extremely large forum, not sure that user limit is going to be an issue.

For research, I would strongly suggest looking at site for phpBB itself - http://www.phpbb.com/ and the forum community there at http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/

I hope this helps.

Would there be any bandwidth issues say if I had 500-1000 users running on LP's shuttle plan?
I guess the best thing to do would be just create a folder for it under my public_html and download it and mess around with it for a while and go from there.

Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

500-1000 users would depend entirely on how large the pages would be (images and content) and how frequently each person posted.  40 GB is a lot of bandwidth for a site to use up.  If you do find that you need more, simply upgrade to Voyager plan which has 80 GB a month.  You can upgrade for the difference in the 2 plans for the remainder of your contract term.

At this point, it is really impossible to say if you would need more bandwidth as the site isn't even existing yet.

Thanks.

Just for comparison Danielle, do you know how much bandwidth Lunar Forums uses?

I'm curious about this too. I have a few ideas for sites that will have forums which would probably have a level of traffic similar to Lunarforums.

Well, I don't have access to lunarforums Cpanel logs since I'm not an admin of the forum.  I can ask Stephanie about it perhaps since she does the forum mods if she has any ideas on it...

Should be fine as long as that is not 1000 active users visiting every day.

phpBB will not use up all the bandwidth on the shuttle plan on its own with that ammount of users. Your eventual problem is more likely to be resource usage on the server (cpu usage or whatever it is (I don't know the specifics)). I was not asked to upgrade from the shuttle plan by Lunarpages until after my board had about 3,000 members. It was getting about 1,000 unique visits a day according to the webalizer stats in cpanel. Bandwidth usage was about 28Gb/month (although I had removed a lot of the images form the board).

You should check out the docs folder. Make sure you have the latest version, 2.0.11

You should have the latest version if you just downloaded it. That takes care of the current security alerts with it.

There are a ton of mods and upgrades you can add to it, if you want to.  Keep track of whatever mods you apply as when it is upgraded you probably will need to reapply them.

Applying mods is a good way to learn more about php coding. And you can do them yourself if you are careful and follow instructions. Copy and paste can become a very good friend of yours too!

Have fun!

The "Read me" in the docs folder say's "phpBB 2.0.8 README"
Should I upgrade or just delete the whole directory and re download it since I am just experimenting with it?
Also, with the newer versions do you still need to make the script upgrade to the viewtopic.php file?

Thanks, Jason

You shouldn't have to make that change with the latest version.

Go back and get it. I wouldn't even bother with the 2.0.8 version.
