Rat, You'll need to do the following: 1. Backup the existing content that you have added in, such as any hacks or mods you have. 2. Backup the Db 3. Upgrade to the latest. 4. if anything has changed from the upgrade, you'll want to import the changes. For any assistance with this, I recommend visiting the Mambo forums. http://forum.mamboserver.com/- Jay

Mods will appear in your modules directory. templates in the templates directory.
backup would be done as any account backup would be done. through cpanel, or by downloading the contents to your local machine.
I'm not entirely sure on importing the changes. what exactly do you mean?
You'll want to confirm that the modules you have are either included with upgrades, or that they will be compatible with the new version.
All of this is explained at the Mambo forums, where many Mambo CMS users are available for assistance.

Thanks Jay, I will get started on doing the various backups. I'm not entirely sure on importing the changes. what exactly do you mean?
You said it, not me,, lol. 4. if anything has changed from the upgrade, you'll want to import the changes.
I will check on the Mambo forums to see about what changes would be included with the upgrade. I hate going there as they are very slow and vague with their help. (nothing like LP) Also what risk would I run to not upgrade and leave my site as it is ?? RAT

at this point, it would be difficult to say.
exploits are definitely possible, which could result in backend attacks, or site defacement.
I really could not say at this time. I would highly recommend upgrading.

I have been looking through the threads at Mambo to try and find out how to upgrade my Mambo without wrecking the mods, hacks, templates, smf bridge etc.,,, but all I find is confusion, there is no tutorials on just how to do this but many threads on people needing to and having problems getting things to work afterwards. There have been a couple of SQL changes thruout the verions and it is complicated for a simple RAT to figure out. I am still awaiting replies to my questions there but it usually takes a long time on that forum (unlike LP, yes I am a spoiled RAT, lol) Is there anyone out there who can teach me to do this, I really need to learn,, walk me thru it OR do it for me ?? I would really appreciate it.
Frustrated RAT (ready to say forget it and leave the old version running which works fine anyway)

Jay, To give you an example of how slow and crappy the support is in the Mambo forums, here is a post made on Feb. 26, 2006 that still hasnt gotten any replies !! I need someone to upgrade my mambo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm currently using 4.5.1 stable. Highly customized. Need someone affordable. Please help. I have posted a question over 3 hrs ago and altho there are over 200+ members online, I still have no replies, and probly wont get any. That is the way it's always been. I will keep trying here as I have never failed to get help here. They have tutorials for everything except upgrades, perhaps if I ever learn , I will make one as there are dozens of people posting there begging for help with this particular upgrade, maybe I could even make some money doing it LOL RAT

OK, I got lucky and got a reply !!! WOoo Hooo ! Now can someone decipher it into "RAT-terms" please ?? I still dont quite understand having never updated anything or worked with sql db`s or phpmyadmin, etc, need some more details please before i attempt something as drastic and risky as this. Thanks as always,,,, RAT Rat, it's very easy, just follow the readme. Don't apply the patch, just update to version 4.5.2 and then overwrite that with version 4.5.3h.
When it says "archive in /installation/sql is the sql data for updating the database" it simply means: open (locally) the folder of the Mambo package you just downloaded and expanded, go to the folder called installation and then run the sql update. Depending on what system you use, you can either apply the sql file via your control panel or you can open the sql file in a text editor, copy the entire content and paste it in the SQL tab's textarea of your phpMyAdmin.
As long as you have a backup (data+structure) to go back to you can always keep trying. Put your site offline if it has a lot of traffic in the meantime. Where is this "readme"? And it will tell me how to update without applying the patch ? And when you say "open and expand the folder of the Mambo package I just downloaded", is that the patch thing or do I download something else,,the 4.5.3h ?? When I find the installation folder, how do I "run" the sql update ? Is there an .exe or what ? (see I am very unsure of what I am doing here lol) I have never used phpmyadmin but I can probly figure that out (I did manage to find a tutorial on how to do backup there) or I can do the copy content thing you mentioned there. I know how to use WS_ftp pretty good too if that is of any help. I just need some more step by step on this (and confidence, lol)

Bah - that wasn't useful.
Still says v 4.5.2 on the front end. Does this mean I have to strip out the file permissions to world and re-extract the update? double bah... regards [Bill]

did you empty out your cache files and reboot then look ? Sometimes that makes the new version numbers show up after upgrading (so I have read) I still have been unable to figure out how to get from my old old version up to the latest,, I have decided to just redo the whole site in XHTML strict with all CSS and not worry about any Mambo Jambo Crappo !! Hope you get yours up to date and working ok ! Thanks for the info !
