I have installed SMF on my site, but would like to personalize it to match the theme of my site rathing than looking so "off the shelf". Even just adding a banner similar to my main site would be a start, but I haven't got the faintest idea how to go about this.
Could some kind expert talk to me like I'm a three year old please?  Crying or Very sad

Don't have a lot of experience with SMF themes, but this looks like a nice place to start learning:

Actually I'm not too bothered about fancy themes, I was rather just hoping to be able to put something across the top like this forum has, so that it actually looks like it belongs to my site. I also remember reading elsewhere about adding Google ads to the forum pages, but it all seemed a bit like rocket science to me  Sad

I could certainly help you but which theme are you currently using?

ok i see what you got. the basic basic theme lol.

open up index.template.php and find:
Code:
<img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/smflogo.gif" width="250" style="float: right;" alt="" />
and replace it with
<img src="THE-LOCATION-TO-THE-IMAGE" />

then you'll be all set Smile

edit: or maybe just search for the /smflogo.gif

OK Bluewaves, thanks for that, I think you've got me on the right track at least, but when I looked at that file I got a bit nervous about tampering with it!
I don't have a logo or image as such, to replace the smflogo.gif with. I was wondering if it would be possible to put the same header that I have on my main site, across the top of the forum?
If I want to put Google ads somewhere on the forum, would I do that in this same file also? Is this a bad idea?

Well one tip I could share that might be obvious, yet useful (cause I don't even remember to do is all of the time) would be to make a copy of your files that you are changing, maybe put them in your My Documents folder for safe keeping.  Then download another version of the file you are changing around to your desktop and edit the desktop one.  That way just in case you mess anything up, you can always go re-upload the normal one that you backed up to your My Documents file.

OK, I managed to get rid of the smf logo in favour of something more relevant to my site (I put a photo in there for now, since I don't have my own logo). And because I couldn't figure out how to change the banner to something like what I have on my site's pages, I changed my pages to look more like the forum!  Not Me I think the site looks better for it actually. Necessity is the mother of invention, after all!
Now (Bluewaves or anyone else), is it possible for me to insert some Google ads, for example in the space between the header and the message boards? If it's possible to do this in the same file (index.template.php) can you point out to me where exactly? Oh yes, and how?  Help
