Newbie to phpBB and have looked around at so much info, I'm confused and need some guidance or direction to posts that will help.

I used Fantastico to install phpBB using my available SQL

I now want to upload different Styles, Avatars, and other graphics.

Let's use a Style as an example.  I know I download what I want and unzip it to a folder on my computer.  Then I need to upload to the php server location that keeps them.  I believe the /templates/ directory.  But I'm not sure what the full location name looks like.  Is it www.mysite.com/phpbb/templates?

Well first off, I use FP2000 to upload my site, so I downloaded an FTP client to upload the Style.  Do I basicallly put the files in the  upload section and enter the correct location to upload to and that's it?  Never used an FTP client before.

Once i have the style (or other avatars, graphics, etc) uploaded in the correct place I know where to go in phpBB admin to find and start using it.

Guess I'm jusut lost on the in between.  Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Also, I've read about the phpBB upgrade for security issues.  I am running phpBB 2.0.08 Do I get the files needed to change them and upload them the same way with the FTP client?  What directory?
Thanks!

Where is the location on the server that I am uploading to?  My initial question was about uploading Styles and various other changes to phpBB, but since I am trying to upload the upgrade to phpBB, I need to know the directory.
I downloaded the Changed Files Only and unzipped and have ready to upload, but I don't know what directory to upload to?  My forum is found at www.iandecker.com/forum2ian but I'm sure that the directory the phpBB lies in that I need to upload the upgraded files to is different.

Also, going back to my initial question, where do I upload the Styles, Smileys, Avatars, etc..?  The exact location.  I need it spelled out of I don't think I'm going to get anywhere.  Thanks for any help!

The phpbb files will be in the same folder as your forums, if it is a phpbb forum. Thus the root folder for your forums is forum2ian.

When I go to my cPanel and look at the File Manager, if I click on .www and then .forum2ian I then see the files that I will be replacing.  But my questions still remains, am I uploading the update to www.iandecker.com/forum2ian or (as it seems in the file manager) www.iandecker.com/www/forum2ian folder?  I'm still confused.  Sorry to be a little slow. Confused   The fact that I've never FTP before throws me too.  Cause it wants an address to upload to and I just want to be sure I put the right location in it.
Thanks for your time!

www is a symlink(shortcut) that actually points to the folder public_html. All web files go in there. Files/folders that go in www or public_html are the ones that show up in
www.iandecker.com, or iandecker.com. Since forum2ian is a folder in public_html, the web address is www.iandecker.com/forum2ian

Ok, I thought I knew what I was doing, but it didn't work.  Here is a walk through of trying to upgrade:

I downloaded the "changes only' phpBB zipped files

I unzipped them to a folder
I copy and pasted the 4 files:cache, contrib, docs and install

So I have one folder with the above in it

I then open my ftp software (BatchFTP), enter the connection as:
www.iandecker.com/forum2ian

(forum2ian is my directory for my forums)

I make sure that I am in Overwrite mode

I connect and see my server files.

I go to the forum2ian folder and open.

I drag the items from my Unzipped folder from my desktop over to the server folder (forum2ian) and start transfer.

It overwrites and finishes.

I go to cPanel and check file manager and it shows the Contrib and Install folders so I know it placed the files there in /forum2ian/

I then go to www.iandecker.com/forum2ian and as it should, it tells me to delete the /contrib and /install folders

But before I do I type:
link deleted for security -Thu

But it does not find the page/file  there is an error 404

So I check the version at the bottom of my forums page, and sure enough I am still running the old 2.0.8 version

So I go back and delete the /contrib and the /install so I can begin again.

But before I do........

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!? Sad

And Garvey, as you can see, what I thought would be simple may not be, so I appreciate your offer on intallation of other things. Thumbs Up

You need to extract the zipped file 2.0.8_to_2.0.11.zip and upload the files and folders in the same directory structure as what it is.

It really helped that you detailed the steps you took so we can help troubleshoot. Thumbs Up

I did do that.  I must have worded it differently.

I unzipped/extracted the version zip file and the 4 other files and put them all in the same folder.

so when you open the folder it shows :

The following 7 folders - admin, contrib, cache, docs, includes, install, templates
all extracted/unzipped

and the following files all php:
faq, index, memberlist, posting, profile, viewonline, common, groupcp, login, modcp, privmsg, search, viewtopic
all extracted/unzipped

Please put the folders back and I will check File Manager and run the upgrade.

Or I could just upload the files myself and run the upgrade.

Let me know if you're OK with me doing that.

I have no problem with you uploading the files and running the upgrade.  Razz   But first, I just uploaded the files again.  Can you do me a favor?  When you go into file Manager can you check that they are there in the right spot at least?  I want to see if I am atleast uploading correctly.  After that, you are more than welcome to upload and upgrade.  I don't want to give up, but I do want to know what, how or why.....if possible. Wink
Thank you!
