I've had several (around 5) users sign up for my discussion boards lately. They all have yahoo email accounts and list some sort of debt consolidation, mortgage refinance web page in their web site line. For instance:

http://debt-consolidation-loan-debt.netfirms.com/debt-consolidation-loan-bad-credit.htm

http://www.hotbotsearch.com/search.php?qq=auto+insurance
which are HotBot searches. I'm assuming this is someone's attempt to make money? Anyone know anything about this? I've changed my signup so that new members are sent a confirmation email - I've had at least one new one signup since then.

They might be bots making automatic signups for the sole purpose of posting their site's URLs around the net. I had problem with bots posting porn sites. Razz I even required admin authorization to activate but their profiles still listed in the memberlist, which is all they care about anyway.

I would suggest you update to the latest version of phpbb for 2 reasons. The most important is there is a vulnerability that is causing a LOT of sites to get hacked. The other reason is this version includes visual confirmation by default, instead of a mod you must manually install. Since bots can't "see" the visual confirmation images, they would fail the test and can't register. I haven't had illegitimate signups since implementing the test.

Yeah, I need to install that visual confirmation mod myself. Anyone got a link to it?
