I installed smf 1.1.4 on a website to run a forum. I installed it through fantastico. Everyting works well on the forum.

My problem: From day one, the only way some members can get logged into the forum is to do a password reset (click forgot password). Memebergroup of member does not matter. Deleting all cookies before trying to log in doesn't matter.

I can't seem to find the common element here. Why some members and not others? Is there a setting I am missing?

Someone from LP support signed up on the forum and looked at the cookie for the password. He said this: "It would be my indication that maybe the browser is not overwriting the hash when the user tries to login rather simply adding onto it, hence having to reset the pass to overwrite the hash to match and allow to login."

But if you delete all your cookies before trying to log in, what difference does it matter what it is doing to the cookie.

Any input on this is really appreciated. So far, no one has any idea.   Confused

Thanks ahead of time.

Not my specialty but I did happen to stumble across a few interesting solutions via Google, might check them out for a little more help.

I read through a few pages, but found nothing that addressed my situation.

I made a board to get member browser info. It seems that most of the users having a problem logging in use IE 7. The ones that don't have a problem use IE 6, firefox, netscape, etc. But if the members that have IE 7 use the login tab, not the quick login or regular login, but click on the login tab on the login page, they get in fine.

What is the difference with where you login?   Confused

This has me at wits end. Seems like I'm the only person in the world with this problem.

How did you install this the first time around - via the control panel or via a download from SMF's site?  Might want to look at re-installing it, see if you have the same issue the second time around.

I see you have also been asking over on the SMF discussion board (simplemachines.org) too. Have you looked carefully at the responses?

Since this happens to only some of your users, and it happens consistently, it's most likely something in their browser settings. Do they have cookies enabled? I don't know if Javascript is involved here, but they could try enabling that too, just to test. If they're using IE, have them put your forum in the "trusted site" category. If they don't have cookies enabled, is your SMF set up to use cookies and not database-driven sessions? To diagnose this, I think you need to get the full browser settings for the users involved, and carefully compare them to the settings for users who aren't having troubles. If nothing shows up there, is there anything different about the account settings or groups for the users having trouble? Have you checked to see if you need to repair your database tables? Maybe these users have corrupted entries. phpMyAdmin has "check" and "repair" database buttons, and SMF has some "repair" capabilities, too. That's all I can think of, as I have very little SMF experience so far. Good luck!

Just now noticed there were two posts about this - so merged them into one for easier tracking.  Please remember to only create one thread per question or issue so that we can easily keep track of your progress.  Thanks!
