I don't know if others are like me- I have upgraded my Wordpress installation manually a few times- not wanting to wait for the Fantastico upgrade to come out.
But... as I understand it, that makes later upgrades via Fantastico some what of a problem, plus I sometimes put off doing an upgrade because of the work involved.
But- today I finally found the WP automatic upgrade plugin -
http://techie-buzz.com/wordpress-plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade-plugin-update.html I downloaded, unzipped then uploaded to my plugins directory- ran it, and a very painless upgrade to the very latest WP version (yes, I made backups before trying it). It does pretty much everything- puts the site in to maintenance mode, diables plugins, downloads and installs the latest version- upgrades the database, and re-enables the plugins. Doesn't touch theme modified files.
I'm a happy camper
