Hi there!

First, let me clarify that this question is NOT related with a dedicated server hosted at LP, but I'm a customer of LP with 2 personal sites (2 domains) I have, and I thought I could get some help here.  hug me

Please feel free to move this thread if you consider doing so.

I like how LP manages spam (storing it in a folder called /spam), and the % of filtered mails. It's just... great.

I manage a dedicated server in the company I work. We develop sites (do not sell hosting), and then we host those sites in a dedicated server. We got around 70 domains in that server.

It uses Plesk 8.0.1, and it comes with SpamAssassin 3.0.6. I want to upgrade it to 3.1.7, but I simply don't know how. I know Linux a bit, but I'm not an expert, an either a veteran system administrator. I tried yum, webmin, googled, read docs, etc... with no clues about how to do this on our production server.

I want a result similar to the one obtained here, but I also don't know if LP does only with SpamAssasin or used another special software.

I've read about some other apps that allow some reverse testings. Also tried RBL lists, but I get problems as some cuestomers use proxies with ISPs that seem to be blocked sometimes (dynamic IPs, etc.) in their own personal Internet connection.

I hope someone can enlighten me a bit, as we all are tired about the spam.

I would be happy if, at least, I can upgrade SpamAssassin to 3.1.7... The first 3.1 version is from septembre 2005. I don't want to know about 3.0.6 ...  Confused

 Help

Thanks in advance!

Hello!  Hiya  Let me see if I can answer at least one of your questions.

Quote
can upgrade SpamAssassin?

I do not think so, since it is so tied into your control panel, I think it would be up to the control panel creator to do so.  I am sure there is probably a reason (maybe due to reliability or security) as to why they haven't done so yet.

Have you checked out the Plesk developer site?  SWSoft.com?
or even visited the SpamAssassin developer site?  They might be able to offer the assistance you require.

SWSoft Support maybe able to answer the questions you need, and possibly even give you a step by step run down of what you need to do Smile

I am sure there is probably a reason (maybe due to reliability or security) as to why they haven't done so yet.

I'm not sure that's the reason... they also use MySQL 3.23 still and old versions of phpMyAdmin. They could include a simple way of updating it, but as an admin is supposed to know how... they just don't.

Jay, I have Googled, searched in SWSoft, knowledge base, SpamAssassin Wiki, Docs, upgrade notes, read lots of forums... with no result. That's why I ended up here, even not being a LP Hosting related question, I though that maybe someone running Plesk that likes to "play" with the system tryed to upgrade and did succesfully. You know... the typical "oh yeah I did it, you only have to blabla...", or "I'm sorry to tell but Plesk 8.0.1 is not compatible with SA 3.1, blabla", or "here you can see how to do it for 8.0.1: link"...

And about their support... well, I could try. The thing is that this server is hosted somewhere by someone that re-sold us the Plesk CP, so we did not get it directly from SWSoft.

Maybe I only have to download the RPM and run the installation, but Plesk is a bit restrictive about some things, that's why I ask about how to do it. As an example, Plesk 7.4 did not have support for SA 3, so we had to stick to 2.63, until we acquired a new server with Plesk 8.0.1.

By the way, I checked it and it is not 3.0.6... we have 3.0.4. Even older...  Crying or Very sad
