Does anybody have experience with this product? www.autolinkexchanger.comAlternatively, does anybody think there is a better product for creating and managing links pages? Many thanks, John

No previous experience here but these types of scripts and services always look a 'bit "scammy" to me. I would suggest the better way to go about this would be to contact like-minded web sites and ask them one on one to exchange links with you. This way you build up a 'bit of a network and get your link exchange done.

Thanks Mitch. What I'm looking for is a script that will create links pages, categories, subcategories, check the currency of links, allow visitors to initiate an exchange etc. i.e. automate all of the functions that can responsibly be automated.
I'm still wanting to select and approve each link exchange myself. Does anyone have any suggestions? There seems to be a lot of products out there but its hard to know the best one without trying them. Since there's a lot of time investment in building good links I'm wanting to find the best script I can. Does anyone have any suggestions - either ones to consider or ones to avoid? Thanks again. John

Might try looking for a few free alternatives here: http://www.hotscripts.com/Do a few searches there, and hopefully you'll be able to find something that suits your needs.

Just keep in mind that link exchanges are useful only if
1) they occur on a site visited by people likely to be interested in your site too (driving direct visits)
and/or
2) the other site (linking to you) is considered by Google (etc.) to be "related" material (improving SE results).
Search engines will penalize you (or at best, ignore links) for links coming from "link farms" and other such agglomerations of unrelated links. If the other site can reasonably be considered "similar" or "related" (but not a direct competitor), it can be useful for you and that site to drive traffic to each other. Hopefully Google (et al.) will see you as "related" and honor the cross links. I would carefully check each proposed link exchange (a manual process) before accepting it, to make sure the links would be beneficial to both sites (Do you really want a link to your site nestled among hundreds of links to V!@gra retailers? Do you really want to link to a direct competitor?).
I have no idea what Google's criteria is for "relatedness", or how automated it is. For example, would it do any good to exchange links with a town or county government (or C of C) under "please patronize our local businesses"? Good luck!

Thanks Mitch & MrPhil. After going through the major scripts I'll think I'll go with PHP Link Directory. The reason for the choice was PHP LD seems to have the biggest base of users, an active developer community, lots of templates and add ons and an active forum. Theres a new version currently in Beta with increased functionality.
Some of the other scripts had fuller feature sets straight out of the box but there seems to be a lot of add ons available with PHP LD. I'll need to get a custom installation to get good integration with my existing site, though I probably would have needed this with any of the other scripts as well.
Will call the section Resources and include articles and other materials to assist clients & visitors and take it beyond basic link exchange.
Once again, thanks for the advice and help.
John
