Some of the software that I install from Fantastico, some of it like Joomla and SMF, have a setting where you can make pages "google friendly".  I know what that means, but they tell me something about apache.  I've heard of apace but I don't know how to modify it so I can use the "google friendly pages" settings they offer.

Hope this all makes since.

Usually when making pages search engine friendly there are changes to be made to the .htaccess file in the appropriate folder to rewrite the url's. These changes supercede the default apache config. Some scripts are capable of making the changes while others require that you manually modify the file.

It used to be that search engine robots/spiders couldn't handle "dynamic" URLs (filename.php?var=value&var=value) and needed URLs recast as "static". This is no longer true. I wouldn't bother with it, but you can read up on it in the Search Engine Optimization board. As wektech said, your .htaccess file will need to be modified to map the static URLs back into dynamic URLs, and some packages may produce a chunk of code to drop into .htaccess (or even modify it themselves).

I installed SEO4SMF for my forum. It was a pain in the butt because LP's Apache needed quite a bit of custom work. I had the guy who made the mod help me out. If you look at the bottom of Lunarforums, you'll see that we have the mod installed here too.
