For Google, submit your site under the appropriate category to http://www.dmoz.org.
Once included in the directory, your site will be listed on several others affiliated with dmoz, google being 1 of them, I believe.

Just make sure your site is fully ready first before submission.

Good luck

What AltaVista cant index

Password-protected sites;
Content from a database (dynamic pages);
Active server pages (asp) with "?" in their URLs; (Note: The engine can index URLs with "?" in them if submitted manually.)
Has problems with frames;
Text embedded in graphics;
Text in multimedia files;
Information that is generated by Java applets or in XML coding;
Acrobat files;
Comment tags;
Information that's deeper than three directory levels down; name

here is an article that might help you http://www.samizdat.com/script/title.htm

If you can't get a page indexed at Google, here might be why. Google says, "Pages that have not been indexed yet probably haven't because not enough other pages on the web link to them -- if other pages don't link to them, we can't assign them a PageRank (our proprietary measure of a page's importance) in a reasonable way. Once other links point to them, we'll pick them up. Google looks at the link interconnectedness among pages and allows the open, vast nature of the Internet to yield the most relevant search results."

This place is grrreat!
 Thanks Lee for the info it helps me a lot.
Gonna update my page soon and i`ll see what i can do to have it indexed.
  Just one question.A simple html page with a graphic image (jpg) set as background would that be to concider as "embedded in graphics" as you said or is that ok for Alta vista.Probably a stupid question but anyway just so i understand.

a search engine doesnt see graphics... so if the keyword is part of an image, jpeg, etc. a search engine is unable to see it
