Big time beginner here but I am trying hard to learn.
I would like to activate the SEF in my Joomla template. Global config>SEF and mod_rewrite can be selected there.
I checked the htacces file and:
mod_rewrite in use
RewriteEngine On...So I assume that parts OK.
Is it as simple as renaming my .htaccess.txt to .htaccess? What about the other .htaccess (file?) that sits right next to it? Will I have two files with the same name? or are they different file types? Do I make the changes in Joomla first or htacces first? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
BTW.. I have read many posts but haven't found any at my level so I apologize in advance.

I have basically the same question.. what do I need to do to get the default Joomla 1.5 SEF features working???

I had it all working fine before under 1.0.11 - 1.0.15 for myself and my clients, but now under 1.5 I can't get it to work. I was able to get it to work for a client using the other hosting company and they suck.. so I'm sure I must be overlooking something simple here.

So you had an existing .htaccess file, and Joomla provided a .htaccess.txt file? The server will only look at .htaccess, so you would need to combine the two under that name (you can't have two different files with the same name). Is your existing .htaccess empty? If so, just erase it and rename .htaccess.txt to .htaccess (or you might have to copy .htaccess.txt over .htaccess, if the system insists on immediately creating an empty .htaccess). If the existing .htaccess has stuff in it, you'll have to manually compare the two and figure out what to move over into .htaccess. Feel free to post both files here and we can help you do it.
