Hello,

My dad has an old-school .html store, and wants to convert this into a PHP store (that I will make) that looks EXACTLY the same.  I will use .htaccess mod rewrite to rewrite .html files -> .php, and grab the PHP file's contents from a MYSQL database.  This is so he can easily change his template and update his item listing.

Problem is, his store is really really really old and ranks #1 in Google and Yahoo in a bunch of keywords.  He is very fearful (and I am Wink) that he will have a small chance of losing these rankings.

So, my question: is masked .php rank the same as straight .html???  I know SEs can't tell the difference, but I'm afraid that the SELECT queries might mess it up, or something....  (If MYSQL is the problem I can also revert to XML or even .txt for storage, no reason to use MYSQL simply just I love it Wink)

Anyways, any answers would be appreciated,

Michael

BTW, does anybody have Netscape 5 on hand please?Huh  I really need it, my dad's hitcounter reported 15% of all users were using stupid Netscape 5!!!!!  Lmao I'd better start optimizing for this Wink

EDIT: Hmm.... I have read somewhere that there IS NO Netscape 5.......  Umm okay well is there like a netscape 5 rendering engine or something???  This hitcounter can't be lying Wink

You shouldn't have any issues in terms of masking PHP as html files. The only thing that may be noticed is that the PHP version may be returned in the headers but that shouldn't affect your site's rankings in Search Engines.

From what I recall it went from Netscape 4.x to 6.x and there was no 5.x. Can you let us know exactly what is being reported? Also, what software is reporting it as Netscape 5?

I read up somewhere that Netscape 5 was the first workings of Mozilla 1.0.... Is this true??  If so should I be looking for Mozilla 1.0?  I'll give you more details later on what exactly it says.

Thanks for your help guys!

I've masked .php to html for a bunch of my pages, and they get picked up well.  The other end of it is, so do the .php dynamic pages too... without masking or a mod rewrite, go figure....

If your dad's html pages are indexed, I'd try to mod rewrite the file names to what is indexed or atleast create redirects for when the spiders check the page... this way you won't get a 404 error and loose a page in the index.

Sounds like you have a pretty good project ahead of you... good luck...
