"AVG" from grisoft.com is good.
It's free, so that's the main thing, and updates can be scheduled daily.
Each update is only about 20k, so it's easier than downloading 1 huge file.

Avast is free too, and I've heard mostly possitive things about it, as well as AVG.

Slam me if you like, but I still go with Norton AV over the others every time. You can see my reason in a multitude of other threads  |

I use Norton's and like it, I used McAfee in the past but didn't like it as much, haven't tried AVG or Avast.
I found however, that even though you install an AV on your computer, you still need to do an online check from a 3rd party. Every-so-often, the online one will catch something missed by the installed one.
I use Trend-Micro for the online AV checkups.

F-Prot is quite good too, but not free. http://www.f-prot.com/I prefer not paying for software, so AVG from GriSoft.com wins every time, although the Graphical User Interface is not very nice to look at, in my opinion anyway. |

It's free for just about everything but Windows.  F-Prot Antivirus for Windows is easy-to-use antivirus software that is also light on your system's resources. That's what I'm looking for, combined with outstanding virus detction and updates. |

Yep, and they are giving away a free year of the plat. 7.0 See this topic. http://www.lunarforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15845&start=15I downloaded, but haven't installed it. I took a little time to check quite a bit of reviews, and reviews of people that have used it, and I decided not to install it. Our ISP will be giving their customers F- Secure, which so far, from what I've read from other users and reviews, looks pretty good. Until we get that, I will run AVG in the background and use McAffe for an on demand scanner. |

I just use the online scanner at trendmicro now and then: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/, i dunno ive tried using virus software before but i find it just gets into too many things on my system, especialy norton, plus so many more exe's running in the background, and that annoying opo ups they have everyday or i should say every five minutes saying something like updates now or something even if you disable the auto updates i can go on and on but i need to breathe  |

I have the pay version and I haven't felt the need to change after over two years. Since noone else will flame hush I must add  C:\PROGRA~\SYMANTEC\S32EVNT.DLL An installable Virtual Device Driver failed dll initialization. I can't get rid of this after three years during which time I have uninstalled Norton, switched to XP from Me, pulled my hair out, etc. If you can make this stop I will buy Norton when Panda runs out (I'll use it as a coaster or something ). |

Depends what you were running... But first things first, my turn to flame - you were running Windows ME?!?!?! - I like Microsoft but ME was an unfinished throw away product to match the 2000 launch because XP wasn't anywhere near ready. I actually refused to sell ME to people, had to turn people away because it was 98 (except corporates who we'd do 2000 for) or no computer until XP. you were running Windows ME?!?!?! Normally, I would deserve that, but it came with the box, crashed and burned, and I got XP as soon as it was financially available. Me was the best thing to ever happen to an antarctic flightless tuxedo wearin' bird. Okay the official Symantec article for the issue you have: Ok. I'm sure I did that with Me, and almost sure I did it after the switch, but I'll try it again just to be sure. And I'll definitely back everything up before I do anything with Symantec. I know you're a fan of the NPF, do you run it? |

I run Norton Internet Security 2004 Professional on my laptop, at the moment. I'm looking to get one of their firewall boxes to protect my network sometime soon But I use my laptop for general browsing directly connected to my DSL, and nothing has protected me better than Norton to date (in conjunction with Ad-Aware 6 Pro) |
