Hi,

My forum logs are showing that I have a member who is using an IP address of "unknown". He is the only one that I am aware of who is able to do this.
We recently had to ban an abusive member from the forum and I know that he has used cloaking software and proxy servers before to make himself anonymous.
Should I be suspicious of this "unknown" IP address ?

It could be a proxy, like the anonymous browsing sites provide, other than that, I'm honestly not sure what else could cause that Smile

Even with a proxy, there will be an IP address.  Otherwise, there will be no connection.

Perhaps there is a bug in the forum.  Does it do reverse DNS lookups on IPs?  Are there more then one person with "unknown" IP addresses?

Thanks for the replies.

This one weirdo is the only member showing an IP of "unknown".
In the past he has bragged about being able to surf without his boss knowing about it etc etc so I am guessing he's using something like anonymizer.com for proxy services.

I am very security conscious as my forum is health related and has received troll and flame attacks from this bloke before he was banned using his DSL connection.

I am now seriously thinking of banning all proxies on the grounds that we do not sell anything, we do not market anything. It's just a site for help and support. If a member doesn't want to show their true IP then we don't feel that they are being open with us. Therefore we would not want them in the forum any way.

Is there a way in CPanel of blocking all proxies from the site ?

It's almost impossible to block all proxies.

You would need a list of them, but as anyone can create a new one, that would be very hard.

It sounds more like a bug. It's not possible to make your IP invisible like that and still browse the internet normally.

Does your forum have an option to hide IP addresses? They might just be using that!

Hi Stephan,

The forum is YabbSE and IP's are visible only to Gmods and Admin.
I'm not sure but I think that the forum is actually reading a zero for the IP and so is then displaying that as "unknown". I can get hold of a list of proxies. If I was to use it would I have to add the list to the Ban IP option in Cpanel ?
