Long story short, one of the admins of our site was the owner of our domain name. He split with the domain and so we bought a new one and set that up for the site a while ago. After some drama, he wants to give it back and is asking for our nameserver details. This doesn't seem to be the same as giving the domain back (is it?)... What are the security issues with giving him our nameserver? Is there other ways for him to give the domain to us without having to give him our details?

Thanks for your help.

He cannot do any damage by knowing your nameserver address. Its publicly accessible information and can be retrieved by doing a simple Whois lookup on any of your domain names.

And yes, pointing the domain (that I'm assuming is registered in his name) to your server is the best way he can "give the domain back."

I would have thought selling it would have been the best way to "give the domain back". Thanks for your reply Yep

If your untrustworthy admin merely points the domain name back to your site, it will be operational under that name (once you add it as an add-on domain, and put some kind of site there). However, he can again walk away with it at any time. If he's truly contrite, he will give (or sell for the balance of the registrar's annual fee) the domain back to you and transfer its control to you. Once you have complete ownership of the domain name, under your control, at your registrar, is when I would start using it for a site.
