[I tried posting this earlier, but the message disappeared when I hit "Submit".]

I have chronic problems with people hotlinking to my images.  (I have problems with images being stolen, too, but that's another topic.)  I turned on hotlink protection, which seems to be working fine, except for Google's cache.

I had expected that my images would not be visible for cached pages, which is unfortunate.  But when I checked from my computer, the images showed up.  I was surprised but pleased.  Then my husband tried to view cached pages on his computer (same operating system, same browser, same networked cable connection so same IP address), and the images were replaced with the hotlink-prevention image.

I have added the various "216.239.*" IP addresses for the Google cache so the cached pages show up okay now.  But does anybody have any ideas as to why the cached pages displayed the images on one (and only one) computer?  'Cuz we're stumped!

Thanks!

It may have had to do with differences in the content of the browser caches on your computer and your husbands computer.  If you both clear your caches and do a hard refresh, I'm sure you'd see the same thing, though ISPs also carry caches at times.

That's part of what was so weird:  it didn't matter how thoroughly I'd cleared my cache (or even visited a certain page), or when I'd restarted my computer last.  The cached images displayed on my computer, and not on my husband's (on the same network) or others in other locations.  Everything was behaving normally except for my computer.

Try a "super refresh" Hold down the Shift Key and click refresh. It was an old trick with older browsers. I think it still does some good!

P.S. Your cache never actually is 100% emptied when you empty it. Anyone running IE has a running history that they cannot delete and that some one with some knowledge can easily access! .. maybe I will post something to expose this info at some point!

F5 key is now a hard refresh on IE and Netscape, or on IE you can right-click and (yes!) hold down shift, while clicking on refresh.  Are you sure it's not pulling the files off of your hard drive somewhere?  Sounds corny, but I've heard cornier Wink

Actually, I use Netscape, so the IE problems wouldn't have been an issue.  I can't check the problem now, because I've got Google excepted from the hotlink protection.  And I'd wondered about the harddrive thing, but my hubby's computer is my old computer, so it has copies of all those images, too.

Thank you for all the suggestions, though.  This comfirms to me that this really was a weird problem!  Razz
