I didn't read into it so much, but it looks like a catch-22 for computer and software manufacturers.  If they actually implemented it, computer sales would probably plummet, and a nice burgeoning black market would be sure to unfold.  Small businesses who build computers would either have to be exempt or go bankrupt.  The private person who builds their own (like many of us) would get their policeware where?  It would have to be programmed right into the CPU or something.  One piece of text reads
quote:
Only someone who violates the law "willfully and for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain" can be convicted.

The "and" in that statement is a very big and.  Means both conditions must be true.  The Bill is not very long.  The full text of the working draft is at http://cryptome.org/sssca.htm.  Another very interesting cyber-legal stuff page that happens to come from my alma matter is at http://www.law.wayne.edu/litman/newdev.html.

i think they're trying to take away too much of our rights away at once...if they're gonna take away our rights, they should do it slowly.

glad you posted that.

no i dont think they should take away rights at all    slow or fast....and i also think after reading it most could be fake

Since alternative operating systems like Linux and FreeBSD would most likely refuse to incorporate government policeware into their code, users of these open-source systems would also be eligible for hard time.

I dont think they can put you in jail for using an alternate operating system!

i don't think they plan to put you in jail for using another os.  they'd probably put the pressure on the company itself.  Anyway, i checked all the hoax sites i knew, because I was thinking the same thing.  As far as i can tell it's real.  I've signed it, and even if it's a fake, there's no harm in signing a petition.

Yes this thing is real but its just a suggestion so far and i have read elsewhere too that major softwre companys dont agree to actions of this kind.
We will see eventually what comes out of this.
I believe this is a construction from people that dont know to well what the Internet is.
There will also always be people that will be in favor of control whatever the prize is in order to gain control and (in their mind) safety.

Quoted From The Site

Only someone who violates the law "willfully and for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain" can be convicted.

So If This Is Right Then We Can Copy Cd's And
Softwarez But We Cant SELL Them

If This Police Warez Goes A Head Will There Be A
Crack Or Patch Available

And Also If Its Leagle To Produce This Kind Of
Privacy InterFEARING Software Can We Do One
For Our Own Use, Like Tracing The Info A Web Site Or Company Or Govenment Has On Its User.
   Then Deleting It

Why dont they do anything to big companies?Microsoft...Arenīt they build operation system with windows media player Which does support MP3 files ? or avi? or mpeg? if you should ask them they will tell you "But all mp3 avi or mpeg  arent movie or music file we support them because  of your other application like game bla bla" .Everybody know that Winamp just is a program to listen MP3 files. So they push us to use or they try to stop us?

Some Label companies are putting out audio CDs that you can't copy or play on a PC.

I imagine the technology that went into this was costly, and guess who the cost was passed on to?
However, the counter action to this was a .50 magic marker.

What they are trying to do is bully mfg. companies of CD-RWs to incorporate a device in
drive that will not allow the copying of copyright material.

These people, the recording industry, are ruthless
people, and will stop at nothing, including taking
your privacy away,(What's next... cameras in the bedroom?)to accomplish what they have set out to do.
Take into consideration that they are big money
backers to many members of Congress and and the
the Senate.

So, take notes of how your Senator and your Reps. vote. Also, contact them, and voice your opinion.
Remember, you hold the ticket to their future in
politics... Where? At the poll.

I've heard a good many people say that by copying
cds, you are taking money from the Artists. Trust me, the Recording industry is just as ruthless to
them. Artists and groups make the bulk of their money touring.

Oasis uses IBM's Digital Media Technology to launch new album

... but will find hard to copy.
